Why Samus vs Master Chief isn't even close

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is officially here, and while most gamers are still stirring the depths, a classic power-scaling problem has bubbled to the surface once again: Master Chief vs. Samus Aran. As both video game franchises continue to grow and new elements are introduced, the brawl becomes even more enticing to imagine. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is no different in this regard, given all the latest tools at Samus' disposal.

To really get to the heart of this argument and objectively (jokingly) explain who comes out on top, players need to take a look back at the achievements and characteristics of both of these characters. Samus and Master Chief have a lot in common, but the things that make them stand out throughout their long history will be the key to deciding which video game character is the strongest. Given the scope of the arguments for each character, this heated debate can get a little overcooked when all is said and done.

Metroid Prime 4's Samus rolls the most races

  • Very superior mobility

  • Much higher damage output

  • Much better durability and shields

  • Fight exploits against threats from God

As for the pros, Samus' Power Suit comes to mind first for allowing her to transform into a Morph Ball and traverse tight spaces. Space jump and screw attacks give her even more maneuverability, as does the Spider Ball ability that allows her to stick to walls. Master Chief is agile for a Spartan, but his mobility is still fundamentally based on the capabilities of an actual human body; he also doesn't have the privilege of having a Vi-0-La, Samus' new high-tech ride in Metroid Prime 4.

Beyond mobility, Samus' arsenal of arm beams is just absurdly destructive. The plasma beam consistently melts through enemies of all kinds, while the ice beam freezes them, and the Wave and Nova Beams literally pass through various forms of solid matter. Additionally, the iconic Power Bombs are borderline tactical nukes in most depictions.

Samus fights and feats

Samus' weapons are superweapon-tier sci-fi, and her durability is very similar in that sense. Samus' wide range of suits all provide resistance to extreme environments. She also has shields and biological enhancements from Chozo DNA, meaning additional non-human strength, durability and reflexes.

Aran's many heroic feats are also often on a different scale. Metroids canonically drain life energy from enemies instantly, and Ridley, the old so-and-so, is a giant dragon who is also a well-respected leader of space pirates. It's already absurd, the kind of headache that would cause, and Phazon-enhanced monsters (including a shadow version of Samus herself), capable of corrupting planetary ecosystems, haven't even gotten a mention yet.

Halo's Master Chief stays in the fight

  • Superior tactical intelligence and a lifetime of military training

  • MJÖLNIR Armor and Combat AI Synergy

  • Weapons designed for combat against humans

  • Top psychological and situational adaptability

Samus might seem like an easy winner now, but if HaloMaster Chief is anything, he's stubborn. Thanks to Spartan-II training since childhood, Chief has years of experience leading troops, improvising under overwhelming odds, and outmaneuvering massive Covenant forces. Chief's X-factor is that these skills mean he rarely needs to just overpower opponents (although he often can).

The technical knowledge of the Chief's MJÖLNIR armor is incredibly dense. But its main advantage is its capacity for an AI companion, be it Cortana or The Weapon, to support everything he does. Nanosecond-level targeting and battlefield analysis are huge force multipliers, and canonically the AI allows him to perform movements beyond normal human neurological limits.

Halo's Combat is undeniably evolved

Halos legendary weapon also hit harder than many may realize. Spartan lasers and fuel rod guns are one thing, but Forerunner weapons (if allowed) operate on hyper-advanced principles that surpass Covenant technology. Powerbombs can vaporize people, sure, but the humble predecessor boltshot digitizes them, which seems a lot more complicated.

Last but certainly not least is Master Chief's countless bona fides, which undoubtedly show that the man thrives in no-win situations. He constantly outmaneuvers Forerunner constructs, routinely interrupts the Covenant, and regularly jumps into the vacuum of space when mostly unnecessary. He has also survived several flood outbreaks, even stopping some fairly large-scale ones without using any Halo rings, something that predecessors once believed to be essentially impossible.

Samus vs Master Chief: Who Wins?

It really depends on how the matchup is framed, as Chief quickly adapts to unknown threats, an extremely important element when facing a fighter as alien-adept as Samus. That said, Samus is strong, plain and simple. Suppose it's a direct comparison of their general standard loadouts and feats as they exist in their game/story; in which case Samus wins more often than not, I'd imagine, because her offensive and defensive techniques are simply on a larger scale of Sci-Fi.

It's hard to imagine Chief surviving a Power Bomb, Screw Attack, or high-level beam weapon for long. In addition to these more esoteric abilities, Samus is also simply stronger, faster, and more mobile. If combat allows greater consideration of tactics and environmental options, Chief becomes much more competitive.

With vehicles, heavy weapons, and time to assess her abilities, the Master Chief was able to force more favorable conditions. Still, in a neutral “arena” fight with no preparation, Samus will almost certainly take it. The power gap is too great, because the combatants are on completely different scales.

The matchup only works in narrative terms

That scale comment is important to note, because the debate, regardless of logic, persists (and is fun to engage in) because they're the same kind of archetype expressed across genres: Samus is a one-woman interstellar weapon of mass destruction operating in a universe of dragon pirates. The boss comes from a more grounded, militaristic sci-fi milieu. They're both equally iconic for being one-man armies, but they're not even remotely on equal power scales.

So of course Samus wins this fight, especially with new technology being introduced Metroid Prime 4: Beyond pushes her further forward. But in the end, as long as fans of sci-fi need heroes to compare, the debate will continue to rage. Hearing what loyalists from both camps can hold on to or conjure up, that's the fun part.
