Which MTG Secrets Of Strixhaven products should you buy and why?

The other original Magic: The Gathering set from 2026 is just around the corner, and for the third launch in a row we get a brand new product to enjoy. First there was Draft Night in Lorwyn Eclipsed, then Turtle Team-Up in TMNT, and now we have the Codex Bundle.

This theme pack is already selling fast at many retailers, and it's not hard to see why, as it offers fantastic value. We'll break down what's included, as well as what other products are available for purchase, in case you need help making a decision.

When is The Secrets Of Strixhaven release date?

Secrets of Strixhaven has a worldwide release date of April 24, 2026. This is the date on which all products can be purchased, with online retailers aiming to have pre-orders with you for this date as well.

The pre-release starts a week earlier on April 17, 2026. Check with your local game store to see what events they are running during the pre-release week.

The release date for MTG Arena is not yet confirmed, but is expected to be around April 21, 2026.

What Strixhaven product secrets are available?

There is at least 17 Secrets of Strixhaven products which will be available via pre-release and into the full launch a week later.

This includes five new Strixhaven College-themed Commander decks and prerelease packswhich make up the bulk of the products on offer.

Most interesting is the new Codex Packwhich is another brilliantly themed offering, and it just goes to show how much extra thought can go into designing a new product.

The Collector booster box, or individual packs if you don't want to spend over $300, is the best way to get the chance draw the rarest cards in Secrets of Strixhaven.

Most of the truly valuable cards are exclusive to Collector Booster packswhich means you don't even have a chance to pull them from any other product.

The MSRP for a Collector Booster box is often considered to be just the package's MSRP x 12, but this often increases depending on availability.

If you are an investor, the Collector Booster box best way to make money from MTG product in short termas these boxes are rarely printed after the first edition, so they start selling for well above MSRP shortly after release.

Should the set be particularly popular, and some of the rarest cards be worth an astonishing sum on the secondary market, this value will only last and grow over time.

Play Booster Box

MTG Secrets of Strixhaven Play Booster.

The most basic product in any MTG set is the Play Booster. Each pack contains a selection of 14 cardswhich may include cards from The List and Special Guest cards. You can also get an art card in the pack, but it doesn't count towards the 14 playable cards.

All of these cards are legal in the Limited format, but cards from all kinds of guest lists are often banned in Standard.

Play Boosters are perfect for drafting sessions and building a collection of playable cardsmostly for the common and unusual. You're still better off buying your rares and mythic rares as singles, if needed.

Codex Pack

This is one brand new product for the release of Secrets of Strixhaven which was teased back in January, but is now official. Each Codex Pack contains the following:

  • Two Collector Booster Packs
  • Six Play Booster Pack
  • 20 Folieland
  • Oversized Spindown Die
  • Two borderless foil promotional cards (from a possible six)

At an MSRP of $90, the value is good in this box. The only problem is that you can't find product close to MSRPas it sold out almost immediately, with packs selling for over $190 on TCGPlayer at the time of writing.

Prerelease Pack

Prerelease packs are back, and five variants are releasedone for each of the Strixhaven Colleges.

Check with your local game store for pricing and availabilitybut each prerelease package comes with the following:

  • One Seeded Booster (booster themed to your chosen college)

  • An unstamped campaign card

Commander Decks

There is five new Commander pre-con tires launched with Secrets of Strixhaven, one for each of the colleges.

On $49.99 eachthey're a reasonable deal, and most retailers, including online like Amazon, offer a bundle with all five pre-cons included.

Standard themed decks

Standard decks of 60 card themes are back, with two different tires on sale for just $23.99 each.

These are one great way to get a newbie into MTG without taking them through the process of deck building, and while the deck isn't often overpowered, they are competitive enough to get someone used to the game and how to play.

The package also comes back, with each containing nine Play Boosters30 lands (15 foil, 15 non-foil), a campaign card, a storage box, a spindown die and two reference cards.

These packages are good for players who want to experience the thrill of opening a few packages but without having to shell out over $100 for a full box of boosters. They're also great to get started with for draft events if you or your group is short on land.
