Veronica Remake and Leak Rumors Explained

Resident Evil has been on a roll lately, getting banger remakes and original stories alike, and this hot streak is expected to continue with Resident Evil Requiem. But while Capcom has become increasingly transparent about Requiemfeatures and development progress, much less is known about the long-rumored upcoming remake project Resident Evil Code: Veronica remake.

Spoilers ahead too Resident Evil Code: Veronica.

Although remakes are somewhat of a controversial topic in the gaming industry, Capcom has done a pretty good job with the concept. In fact, it's not too much of a stretch to say that remakes of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 represents the gold standard of video game revenge, retaining the spirit of its iconic predecessors while making smart, contemporary changes. Resident Evil 3s remake was relatively less successful, but opinions of it have softened over the years. Of course, possible missteps included RE3 remake hasn't done much to dampen excitement for something like a Resident Evil Code: Veronica remake, which would offer a modern spin on one of the franchise's most unique and compelling stories.

Most of the following information comes from Dusk Golem, a long time Resident Evil leaker who, despite having a decent track record, has gotten things wrong before.

The Resident Evil Code: Veronica The remake will reportedly have the same over-the-shoulder perspective and shooter gameplay as others RE remakes. According to the Dusk Golem, the Code: Veronica remake is expected to be “[Resident Evil 4 remake] good levels.”

Changes to Rockfort Island

The majority of the original Code: Veronica takes place on Rockfort Island, a remote, umbrella-controlled landmass that hosts all sorts of human rights abuses and experiments, including those that lead to the devastating t-virus. It was once home to a large community of Latin American settlers, although its original residential purpose has largely been erased by the time Code: Veronica starts.

It is something of a character in and of itself, and it seems that Code: Veronica remake tries to hammer that idea home. Dusk Golem's reports indicate that the remake's Rockfort Island will be a semi-open world with hub and spoke areas, perhaps not too dissimilar to the level design of Resident Evil Village. Apparently, Claire will have access to a motorcycle that will facilitate travel to different parts of the island.

Code: Veronica's leaked story changes

Mutated Alexia in Resident Evil CODE: Veronica

The original Resident Evil Code: Veronica follows Claire Redfield as she is kidnapped and imprisoned on Rockfort Island, in the middle of her search for Chris. She meets Alfred Ashford and Albert Wesker, who turn out to be alive after the events of RE1and joins forces with a young man named Steve Burnside. Eventually, Chris Redfield joins as well.

It appears that this core premise will be retained in the remake, but leaks suggest notable changes. For one thing, Steve Burnside's characterization is said to be quite different: in the original Code: Veronicahis boyish crush on Claire manifests itself in odd, creepy, or otherwise awkward behavior that is not treated as such in the game. This one obviously hasn't aged well and wasn't really cool at the time either, so it Code: Veronica remake will, understandably, tone him down a bit. He will still have feelings for Claire, but these will reportedly be communicated through more realistic, relatable and well-adjusted behavior on his part.

Changes by Albert Wesker and HCF

More important than Burnside's recharacterization are the reported changes to both Wesker and his paramilitary group, the HCF: they will play a bigger role. This makes sense, since Wesker and the HCF stopped playing more important roles later on Resident Evil game. Track them down further Code: Veronica could bring the story more in line with those that came after it.

It's not exactly clear how Capcom will expand the roles of Wesker and HCF, but reports indicate at least two major changes to Wesker-centric plot beats:

  • Chris's confrontation with Wesker, in which he is beaten by the latter, has been reimagined as an interactive boss fight rather than a cutscene.

  • Wesker's fight with Alexia Ashford has been canceled.

Assuming this information is true, the Chris-Wesker fight might be a little less one-sided; perhaps even its results will be somewhat different. Potentially more important is the alleged removal of Wesker's fight with Alexia. This could be a sacrifice made at the altar of tempo or tone, but it could also indicate a lessening of Alexia's role in the remake.

Who is developing Resident Evil Code: Veronica Remake?

According to leaks, the Code: Veronica remake will be directed by Yasuhiro Anpo and Kazunori Kadoi, the duo responsible for Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 2 remakes. Reports have also claimed that the remake was originally developed by M-Two, an independent support studio, before being transferred to Capcom's own Division 1 team.

Resident Evil Code: Veronica Release Date

Here's the million dollar question: when will this be rumored Resident Evil Code: Veronica actually launching remake? Of course, Capcom itself has not commented on this, but Dusk Golem claims that development is going better than expected and that the game could be released before Resident Evil 0 remake. Dusk Golem also claims that Capcom is targeting an early 2027 release window.

Again, none of this information should be taken as gospel, but the concept of a Code: Veronica remake is far from strange. Capcom has seen great success with their previous remakes, and considering how dated Code: Veronica compared to, for example, the original Resident Evil 4there is a lot of potential for significant, exciting improvements.
