Sakamoto Days becomes Netflix's biggest anime -hit ever
Sakamoto Days dominates Netflix and surpasses Veteranime to become the platform's biggest hit.
The charm of simplicity
Sakamoto's past and present could no longer be apart. He spent several years killing people and serving the title “The Legendary Hit Man”, while his current only runs a convenience store with his family. Sakamoto's biggest problem is now taking care of his family and entertaining his small convenience store. Even in negative situations, we see him care about things that others would consider everyday.
In section 2, in the middle of a fight against son hee and bacho, we think Sakamoto is more concerned about buying pork balls for his daughter. Moments like this make the show very entertaining and build Sakamoto as a nice character. Anime's lighter tone allows viewers to simply care about small details without worrying about a comprehensive, complex plot, which makes it very easy to look at. It is reminiscent of anime as Spy X Family and The road of the house house.
Merging of Comedy and Action
Although there are a good number of action scenes, the show continues to retain its easy -going nature by melting it with comedy. In section 1, Shin fires a gun against Sakamoto. But Sakamoto simply rejects the ball with a cough drop. Sakamoto's promise to AOI also forces him to use non-dead ways to fight deadly enemies. So later in the section, when he decides to help Shin, we see him open a large arsenal of weapons, but he simply chooses a stunning weapon to fight the murderers.
The action shines through characters
Most popular main characters go through a growth journey. They start inexperienced and as the plot progresses they continue to become stronger. But Sakamoto had already reached this peak. So the show invests instead in the surrounding characters to create an interesting dynamic.
In section 1, we are presented to Shin Asakura, a killer who has the task with two options: either convincing Sakamoto to return to the underground or kill him. He fails to do either and risks his own life to defend Sakamoto. He is rescued by Sakamoto and starts working under him. Because Shin is a psychic, he can read Sakamoto's mind. Shin becomes a means for anime to openly share Sakamoto's thoughts without destroying his calm and collected character. Later, this ability also allows him to win a fight against a deadly murderer.
In section 2 we meet Lu Shaotang, the last surviving member of a Mafia clan. She is a pretty happy and relaxed addition to the show. Her interaction with Shin is comic, and she also creates a heartwarming tone in her sibling -like relationship with Hana. But at the same time, she also has a sad backstory that also helps to reveal pieces of Sakamoto and Aoi's past.
In addition, other characters such as Yoichi Nagumo and Cooked helped reveal Sakamoto's past through their back stories. In section 5, Yoichi even comments on Sakamoto to become much weaker compared to his premiere. This suggests that Anime may follow Sakamoto's path towards regaining its lost strength.
