Tradie’s chilling act after killing pregnant wife Arnima Hayat

A businessman who killed his pregnant wife four months into their wedding and doused her body with acid later had a chilling conversation with a friend in which he laughed at the young woman’s murder.

Meraj Zafar, an apprentice builder, pleaded guilty to killing Arnima Hayat, 19, at their flat in North Parramatta, western Sydney, on January 29, 2022.

Before his death, Ms Hayat, an aspiring doctor and medical student at Western Sydney University, had expressed regret over marrying the then 20-year-old Mr Zafar to a friend.

The couple had married in a secret Islamic ceremony in October 2021.

On the night of January 29, Ms Hayat desperately texted a friend from university.

“I have no one but you,” Ms. Hayat wrote.

“You have no choice. You have to stay with him,” the friend replied.

In his final message at 9.10pm, he wrote: “No, I hate it.”

45 minutes later, she was dead.

The facts of the case, presented to the NSW Supreme Court this week, revealed that Zafar killed Ms Hayat by “compressing her neck and/or suffocating her”, as per The Telegraph newspaper.

The day after the murder, Mr Zafar went twice to Bunnings, Northmead, and purchased a total of 100 liters of hydrochloric acid.

After returning home, he poured hydrochloric acid into the bathtub and moved Ms Hayat’s body into the tub “in an attempt to dispose of Ms Hayat’s remains”, the facts revealed.

On January 30, the trader performed five Internet searches, including: “Can hydrochloric acid burn through the skin?” and “how old are you in Sydney for murder”.

That day he called his mother and told her that Ms. Hayat was not breathing.

She advised him to call an ambulance, but he refused, telling her: “The police will take me and put me in prison.”

During the conversation, Mr. Zafar asked her how much a ticket abroad would cost.

His mother called 911, forcing police to force entry into the apartment.

Ms Hayat’s naked body was discovered in the bathtub, where the acid had decomposed her body so badly that her next of kin could not recognize her.

“Ms Hayat was lying face down with her face hidden and half twisted,” the facts state.

“There was a strong chemical odor in the air that was overwhelming, and the police evacuated the apartment due to the hazardous quality of the air emitting from the closed and confined bathroom.”

The day before his arrest, Mr Zafar was driving when he told a friend: “I just killed someone, I swear to God I killed someone” and laughed, according to the facts.

He later handed himself over to the police on January 31.

It was not the first time that Mr Zafar was violent towards his wife.

Mrs Hayat had previously complained to friends about her husband’s violence, but had not reported the matter to the police. The age relationships.

In May 2021, Ms Hayat lost consciousness when Mr Zafar put his hands around her neck.

Ms Hayat suffered bruises around her throat, chest, left wrist, left arm and thigh.

Mr Zafar will return to court on August 5 for sentencing.
