Todd Howard teases future Starfield plans

Todd Howard has revealed what players can expect from the future Starfield content, putting a damper on the idea that a significant overhaul is on the way for Bethesda's space RPG. Howard has revealed that players who are already Starfield fans will have plenty to look forward to with what's to come for the game.

Starfield is an interesting case for Bethesda. After the initial release, Starfield received rave reviews from critics, who praised the scope of Bethesda's latest role-playing game. However, among the gaming community, it received a slightly colder reception, even with fans who usually enjoy Bethesda titles. This can be seen in the game's SteamDB player count. Starfieldwith a 24-hour peak concurrent player count of 3,827 at the time of writing, has significantly fewer players than both Fallout 4 and Skyrimwhich have 24-hour highs of 36,062 and 30,021 respectively. It is important to note that Starfield is also available on PC Game Pass, which of course will affect the number of Steam players. Starfield has also suffered from a lack of post-launch content. Since its release in September 2023, there has only been one expansion pack, with a second announced but not yet revealed.

New Starfield content doesn't win over players who didn't like the game before

Speaking on the Kinda Funny Gamescast, Todd Howard shared a little about what to expect from the future Starfield content. – It is clear that we have worked on a lot Starfield content, we haven't talked about it yet,” Howard confirmed. “The end of last year was rocky for us. We have periods where we focus on IPs and franchises, and Fall-out obviously dominated the fall and earlier this year, but you've seen that.” With the success of Fall-out TV show, Bethesda has continued to release new content for Fallout 76as well as Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition. Howard then revealed when fans can expect to hear about the upcoming things it's been working on Starfield. “And I can tell everybody that we're going to talk about it soon. We're going into a phase where we're going to talk about Starfield and really show it the right way.”

For a long time, rumors have pointed towards a major Starfield update in 2026, with some speculation that there would be a significant overhaul in the same vein Cyberpunk 2077s 2.0 update. According to Howard, the content coming is more for those who are already fans of the game, as he set expectations for its future straight. “It isn't Starfield 2.0. I've seen some of it, and to set expectations – I think it's that kind of thing, if you will Starfieldwe think you'll love this. It's updates and things that change the game, not in an isolated way, but you know “meta” – using outer space and things in ways that we haven't.

I think it's something like that, if you will Starfieldwe think you'll love this.

By the sound of it, the new Starfield the content will be for the fans, and Howard agrees. In fact, he is not convinced that those who did not enjoy Starfield before will be overcome by the things to come. “If Starfield is something that didn't connect with you immediately, or you bounced off of it, or found it boring in places – I don't think it's going to fundamentally change that,” he explained. “But if you're someone who loves Starfield and we think we're really happy with that.”

Bethesda has yet to reveal Starfields second expansion, which is expected (but not confirmed) to arrive in 2025. In addition to that, the developer also seems to be preparing to bring Starfield to PlayStation 5, after over two years of Xbox console exclusivity. It would be cool to see players have more choices about where to enjoy Starfieldso hopefully it happens sooner rather than later.
