This person must lead every Scarlet Witch project from now on

Important takeaways

  • Jac Schaeffer is essential to any Scarlet Witch project due to her success with WandaVision and Agatha All Along.
  • Schaeffer understands Wanda's character and potential, making her important to any future film or series about the wizard.
  • Marvel Studios cannot afford to continue Scarlet Witch's story without Schaeffer's involvement in some capacity.

Wanda Maximoff's return to Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) feels imminent, with Kevin Feige hinting that it's just a matter of when and how. Elizabeth Olsen will likely return in a standalone Scarlet Witch movie, or possibly a second season of WandaVision. But regardless of the project, a Marvel Studios writer/producer should be involved – preferably in a leading role.

In her last appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of MadnessWanda sacrifices herself to destroy Mount Wundagore and destroy every copy of the Darkhold across the multiverse. Also Agatha All Along indicating that Wanda is gone for good. But in the MCU, no one is ever truly “dead,” especially with the multiverse still in play. So, imagining a “Scarlet Witch will return” title card has appeared, who will take the reins of her next project? The answer lies in looking back at someone who led both teams WandaVision and Agatha all the time: Jac Schaeffer.

WandaVision Showrunner Talks Season 2 Possibility

With four episodes left in Disney Plus' WandaVision season 1, showrunner Jac Schaeffer was asked about the possibility of a second season.

Who should oversee all Scarlet Witch projects from now on?

Jack Schaeffer

Marvel Studios need look no further than Jac Schaeffer for any upcoming project involving the Scarlet Witch. As the creator of WandaVision and Agatha All AlongSchaeffer has proven her mettle, and the universal acclaim of both shows is a testament to her talent. Her presence is essential to any future films or series featuring the sorceress or related characters. In fact, if a standalone Scarlet Witch movie is in the works, there's strong reason for Schaeffer to take on the directorial role.

Although Wanda has been a significant presence in the franchise since her debut in Avengers: Age of Ultronher arc was undoubtedly peaking WandaVisionthanks in large part to Schaeffer and her team of writers. As head writer and showrunner, she clearly understood the character and her potential. Schaeffer also excelled at adding other series-related characters to the mix, such as Agatha Harkness—so much so that she went on to successfully helm the Agatha spinoff series. She also seems adept at handling magic and sorcery elements in the MCU, establishing her potential for long-term involvement.

Jac Schaeffer is key to Wanda's future in the MCU

Wanda in the Multiverse of Madness

It's worth noting that Jac Schaeffer wasn't part of the crew either Multiverse of Madness — and that movie, while decent, didn't really do justice to Wanda or her arc. This underlines how important Schaeffer is and will be to every Wanda-focused project going forward. In fact, there's a growing buzz among fans on social media suggesting that Marvel should make her a Kevin Feige-like figure, overseeing not only the Maximoff family storylines, but other major television projects as well. Many fans already see her absence from the upcoming Vision Quest show on Disney+ as disappointing.

Right now even more than WandaVisionthe success of Agatha All Alongs debut season is a sign of Jac Schaeffer's growing demand. She not only served as head writer for that series; she also directed three episodes, including the notable episode 7, “Death's Hand in Mine.” A standalone Wanda movie could bring in characters from AAAsuch as Agatha, Teen (Billy Maximoff) and Aubrey Plaza's Rio/Lady Death. That would set them up for exciting MCU prospects like the Midnight Sons or even the Young Avengers. Not to mention, all of this can tie into what's to come Doomsday and Secret Wars events.

Could Schaeffer take on a bigger role at Marvel Studios?

Agatha and Billy in Agatha All Along

Schaeffer's role in Major Avengers project may be similar to how James Gunn served as Executive Producer on Infinity War and Playoffsas a credit to how well he handled his Guardians of the Galaxy sign. Her record with MCU films, as an original writer for Black Widow and her uncredited writing additions Captain Marveldidn't get off to the best start. But after WandaVision earned an impressive twenty-three Emmy nominations (the most for a limited series that year), Schaeffer will now likely have more authority and autonomy within Marvel Studios.

There is also a (somewhat far-fetched) potential for WandaVision to be renewed for another season if the standalone movie idea doesn't pan out. Schaeffer even commented on this in a 2021 interview with The Hollywood Reporter:

I can't talk about a second season. It really fits the Marvel philosophy. Kevin is so good at coming out and saying, “Here's what's going on!” to a point. “Here's the field, and this is where the field falls off.” A second season is not something that can be discussed that is out on the field yet.

The MCU is no longer the relatively simple universe it was a decade ago, when it focused on six or more Avengers and a singular threat to the planet. Now, with the multiverse and a growing list of heroes and their variants, keeping track of everything is becoming a challenge. Having someone like Jac Schaeffer take creative control of a specific type of Marvel project, such as supernatural stories, could help ease the burden on Kevin Feige. No matter what, the bottom line is clear: the MCU can't afford to continue any future Scarlet Witch story without Schaeffer's involvement in some capacity.
