This is how multiplayer works in Slay The Spire 2

If you have played Slay the Spire 2 alone, you might notice that this isn't a radical sequel: it plays pretty much the same as the original game, with better art, new maps and enemies, and many other changes and details. But you've been sleeping on what makes Slay the Spire 2 a new experience: playing with friends.

Yes, this roguelike deck builder has a co-op mode, where you can play your runs, progress and build your decks with friends. Let's learn how Multiplayer works in Slay the Spire 2 and how you can play with friends.

Slay the Spire 2 is currently in Early Access, and the content of this guide is subject to change.

How to play with friends

The multiplayer menu in Slay the Spire 2 shows the Host and Join options.

You can start playing co-op with up to three friends as soon as you start the game. You will see a window suggesting that you run alone first, but you can ignore it.

To start playing with friends, go to Multiplayer and choose whether you want to host or join (it does not affect anyone's progress). The former will lead you to the character selection screen, where you will be able to invite your friends by pressing the button at the top left of the screen. The latter causes you to first join a game before selecting this.

Then you choose the default mode (the only one available at the moment), and your coop run starts.

Progression in coop also works the same way. You will progress in your compendium and unlock eras and other things as if you were playing alone.

How multiplayer works

In all essentials, Multiplayer works the same way as playing Slay the Spire 2 alone: the core mechanics of the game and how you progress are the same. However, there are some interesting details and extra mechanics when playing coop.

  • Map drawing. You can make drawings while choosing the next route on the map. Excellent for suggesting routes.
  • Enemies are reinforced. They won't do new things, though their health and damage will scale depending on how many players there are in the group. Also keep in mind that they focus on all players at all times.
  • Exclusive multiplayer cards. There are special cards that affect multiple players or just your allies. Plus, you can use your Potions on allies.
  • Everyone has their prey. When you interact with NPCs or participate in events, each player will get their loot. When you open a chest, however, you must decide who will keep each relic.
  • Sacrifice your healing. When you're in a campfire, instead of resting your character, you can give the healing to your ally.

As a final note, each character will have their own health bar, and you can continue if someone falls – it will be over when all players die.
