Things to know before playing HumanitZ 1.0

HumanitZ finally got its official launch in early 2026. After years of Early Access and thousands of players surviving in this world, the game received a massive update that changed how many systems work and what you can expect for the future of the game. The upgrade or infection systems, for example, were renewed.

Whether you're coming from years past or you're a brand new player, we've gathered some explanations and advice that will let you have a less rough time with all the shenanigans around. Let's go through our beginner tips and tricks for HumanitZ.

How to choose a profession

When you start a new game, you will be able to choose a profession for your character. These go from unemployed to electricity

Engineer, and what you choose depends solely on how you want to play. You can read our career guide to know more about each of them.

Although choosing one will permeate how you play for quite a few hours, it's worth saying that you can unlock a second profession and even a third as you play. For the second you need to be level 30 and for the third 60. Remember though that you don't level up as fast as you did in Early Access.

Gear up!

By the way, after your profession you have to choose an affinity for your character. Unless you want to make things harder from the start for some sadistic reason, we recommend skipping this during your first few hours.

Start zone, leave the rest for now

Another thing that you must choose before starting your new run is a Spawn Point. This basically determines at which point on the map you spawn, which will drastically change the following things: amount of resources and loot, nearby buildings, and number of zeeks.

For beginners, simply choose the Starter Spawn. It may sound obvious, but there are many options, and it can get a little confusing. Meanwhile, if you want to start with a little more difficulty, you can check out our selection of the best Spawn scores.

Get or craft a weapon ASAP

HumanitZ Beginner's guide tips (5)

You can knock out zombies with your bare fists. You knock them down, and then you can hold G and choke them or perform a grab that kills them in seconds. But this special attack takes time, costs half your stamina, and it also leaves you vulnerable to other zombies. So it's only really profitable when fighting one on one.

This is why it is very important that you find or craft a weapon as soon as you can. It doesn't matter if it's a firearm, a sophisticated knife or an improvised ax you created with two stones. You must have a proper weapon to defend yourself or you want to last a long time. Also keep in mind that noise is a big factor and attracts a lot of enemies in this game.

Startup missions are good

HumanitZ Tips for Beginners Guide (9)

As you take your first steps, you will notice that you have a quest window at the bottom left of the screen. These are beginner quests, and they guide you step-by-step with simple tasks that teach you what you can craft and where to get the resources you need.

It might not look that useful at first, but it's the kind of hand holding that can really make a difference in a type of game like this.

If you don't want these missions and you prefer to play at your own pace, you can disable the missions in the Settings menu.

How the infection system works

HumanitZ Tips for Beginners Guide (6)

Another thing that has been reworked in the 1.0 version is how you get infected by zombies. Now, whenever you get hurt by a zeek, your infection level will start to rise. You will see this as a small green icon with a skull next to your life bar.

If a zombie just hits you, it will go up slowly, but if it grabs and bites you, half the meter will fill. Reach 100 percent and you're dead.

That's why you have to take your battles against zombies seriously. You have ways to deal with the infection, either with medicine that heals 50 percent of your infection, or the Infection Inhibitor, which you can craft and reduce your infection gradually.

Unlock as many skill trees as possible

HumanitZ Beginner's guide tips (7)

If you've been playing on Early Access, you'll notice that the skill system has changed in 1.0. Now the skills are locked behind professions or categories/groups. For the latter, you'll need to complete certain in-game tasks to be able to view the group's skill tree and start unlocking upgrades.

For example, the Bows Skill Tree asks you to craft a bow, craft an arrow, and kill 25 enemies with this weapon.

There are some of these groups that can take you a few hours to unlock, especially if it's your first time playing the game. But you should make this a priority, so you can make your character much better when it comes to combat, traversal, survivability, builds and more.

Learn how to build storage containers

A big aspect of HumanitZ is the management of your inventory. In addition to finding or crafting backpacks to increase what you can carry at all times, you can also create storage containers, allowing you to store many items in them. The best part? You can build multiple storage containers and leave them in the buildings you want.

To create one of these you need seven wood, one scrap metal and ten nails.

If you die too much, don't forget console commands

HumanitZ Tips for Beginners Guide (8)

The tips written in this guide up to this point are focused on making your life in HumanitZ a little easier, while still maintaining a certain level of challenge. After all, we believe that is the essence of the game: to have an exciting, fair challenge.

However, if you keep failing or getting frustrated with some things, but you still like most aspects of the game, we might have a solution. When playing alone, you can open the chat and insert some commands that will allow you to change your game in big ways. From turning on God Mode and earning millions of experience points in a second, to crafting all the items you could ever need.

Use this to escape difficult situations and avoid death, or just to experiment and see everything the game has to offer. The decision is up to you.
