With almost two dozen types of Pokemon to catch in Pokemon Legends: Z-A and over 200 Pokemon included in the game, it can be hard to work out who will help you be the very best if you include them on your teams.
You’ll be catching Pokemon throughout the city of Kalos in the Wild Zones around town, and there’s a mix of ‘mons available in each Zone, but which ones are most worth your efforts? We’ve picked the strongest Pokemon of each type that’s available in Pokemon Legends: Z-A to help you get the most of your game time.
For dual-type Pokemon, we’ll consider their primary typing for this list. We’ve included stats for their base form and Mega Evolution, with info on each of a Pokemon’s multiple Megas if applicable.
Normal Type
Strongest Pokemon: Drampa

Normal types often go overlooked in Pokemon games, what with so many ultra-powerful other types, but Drampa has always been something of a force to be reckoned with. Introduced in Sun and Moon, this dragon-like Normal-type is said to be rather protective of the children to whom it’s close.

Here are the easiest spots to farm for shiny Pokemon.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A introduced Mega Drampa at long last, though, giving this powerful pal a stat boost to make it even more competitive than before. Its already impressive Special Attack increases once it goes Mega, and with so many elemental moves in its repertoire, you can’t go wrong with compounding its damage output.
Fighting Type

Lucario has been a fan favorite ever since its introduction back in generation four, a title its held proudly ever since, and this bipedal boxing fox has only become stronger over the years. While you’ll find its base form to be one of the strongest Fighting-types in most Pokemon titles, its Megas are where it really shines.
It already had a Mega form when Mega Evolutions were first introduced, but Pokemon Legends: Z-A has introduced a second Mega for Lucario, and this allows you to choose how you’re going to build this first-place fighter.
The regular Lucarionite will give you the first iteration of Lucario, whose already impressive, balanced Attack and Special Attack stats both raise. Mega Lucarionite Z, though, will give you the new form, which becomes much more of a Special Attacker instead.
Flying Type
Strongest Pokemon: Salamence

Picking Salamence for the best Flying-type Pokemon in Pokemon Legends: Z-A feels like something of a cop-out, but the only two Pokemon with Flying as their primary typing are Noibat and its evolution Noivern, whose stats absolutely pale in comparison with the much more powerful (and beloved) Salamence.
Another Pokemon whose Mega form was introduced back in Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire making its gallant return, you’ll find Mega Salamence to be a straightforward fighter all around. Its Defense skyrockets in its Mega form, but gains a pretty sizeable Speed boost even despite this extra armor.

Poison is another Pokemon type that’ll often be thought of secondary after the elemental powerhouses you can catch, but Dragalgae has always been the proof in the Poison that these toxic friends can certainly pack a punch.

Hyper Strong Pokemon don’t mess around.
When you let your Dragalgae go Mega, you’ll see a variety of impressive boosts, mostly to its Special stats in Special Attack and Special Defense. And if you thought some of those powerful poison moves were potent before, you haven’t tried them yet with Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s new Mega form for Dragalgae!
Ground Type

Choosing the best Ground-type Pokemon to add to your team comps in Pokemon Legends: Z-A can be tough, since this game gave us so many powerful choices with new Mega Evolutions to consider as well, but it’s Excadrill that comes out on top when you look at the stat spread for the other Ground-types.
You’re always going to have a slew of powerful physical moves with a Pokemon that has an Attack stat as high as Excadrill’s, but its Mega form adds an impressive extra 30 points to this already staggering total. Knock your opponents to the ground quicker than ever with this great Ground-type.

While you’ll need to have gotten it in a Mystery Gift to celebrate the arrival of Pokemon Z-A (or transferred it in from another game during which it was a special event), those who managed to get a Diancie are in for a delight when they battle with the strongest Rock-type Pokemon.
Diancie also got a new Mega form with the launch of Pokemon Legends: Z-A, and you’ll see it sacrifice some defensive abilities of both types to gain both Attack and Special Attack. Use its mix of innate Rock moves to capitalize on the Attack boost, and then enjoy some extra oomph for your Psychic and Fairy-type moves as well.

We had a pretty hard time choosing the best Bug-type Pokemon you can catch in Legends: Z-A, what with Heracross always being a solid pick for the entomologist players and Pinsir being something of a force to be reckoned with for speedrunners this time around, but at the end of the day, Scizor is tough to beat.
Another Pokemon to get a new Mega form in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, Mega Scizor enjoys boosts to five of its six stats, with only its base HP remaining the same (at a fairly low 70HP). Attack and Defense get the sharpest increases, but Special Attack and Special Defense are nothing to sneeze at, either.

Fans of the original series of Pokemon may be surprised to see someone other than Gengar as our pick for the best Ghost-type Pokemon in Legends: Z-A; we were surprised to pick them! But comparing stats side by side for Gengar and Chandelure, we see the latter come out just slightly ahead in this title.
Things From Pokemon Legends: Z-A That Need To Carry Over To Gen 10
Please make these features standard across Pokemon games.
With Ghost moves typically dealing Special Attack damage, you’ll revel in a pretty good boost to an already impressive Special Attack stat once Chandelure evolves into the new Mega Evolution form it received with Pokemon Legends: Z-A.

Fans have loved Metgagross ever since we met Steven back in Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, and the sheer force it brings onto the battlefield with it can’t be reckoned with by the other Steel-types in Pokemon Legend: Z-A.
While you’ll likely want to boost its stats a little before battle, you’ll find it to be a great choice for practically any fight in the game, with a resistance to a staggering ten of the 18 core types of Pokemon. Rely on its Attack-based moves to get the most out of having your Metagross go Mega.

Delphox with its recently-added Mega form very narrowly missed out on taking the title for the best Fire-type Pokemon you can find in Legends: Z-A, but longtime fan-favorite Charizard continues to be a true force to be reckoned with when it comes to these fiery friends.
Your mileage with Mega Charizard will vary depending on which Charizardite you give it to hold. Mega Charizard X switches to more of a balanced pick with even specs in both Attack and Special Attack, making it viable no matter how you choose to fight no matter if you’re using Flying or Fire moves. Mega Charizard Y, meanwhile, pours all of those boosts into Special Attack to make it one heck of Fire user.
