The strongest flying Pokemon in Pokemon Legends: ZA

If Pidgeot taught us anything, it's that Flying-type Pokemon are usually stuck with boring secondary types, but luckily, Pokemon Legends: ZA brings back some of the most powerful options from the entire series. The base game gave us a solid group of Flying-type Pokemon to enjoy, but those with Mega Evolutions became much more valuable when the Mega Dimension DLC dropped.

Rogue Mega Pokemon dictate the metagame in Mega Dimension, as your best method for defeating these raging rogue Pokemon is to fight fire with fire. You'll benefit from Flying-type Pokemon that can Mega Evolve and deal heavy damage to the Rogue Mega Pokemon bosses you'll encounter throughout your journey in Hyperspace Lumiose.

Flying-type Pokémon from the base game are included, but the context of the Mega Dimension DLC greatly affects new placements.

Flamigo may be one of the most bizarre Pokémon ever created. After all, it's basically just a flamingo that can't spell, but a closer look at its stats tells a different story. This Pokemon's Attack stat stands out as the clear leader for its Base Stat Total (BST), and its secondary Fighting typing means it can take advantage of a wider range of cover moves.

The main character stands next to Runerigus in Pokemon Legends: ZA.

Who makes these evolutionary claims?

Fortunately, Fighting and Flying's weaknesses don't overlap to cause a quadruple weakness, but you won't get many defensive resistances from the combo either. Flamigo might have been even higher on this list if it had access to its abilities like in the main series games, but it still serves as a decent option for you to use early on in your Hyperspace Lumiose adventure.

Crobat is one of the best Flying-type options added in the Mega Dimension DLC, but it's best used against opponents that don't boast many cover moves, as this Pokemon's defense is quite fragile. Fortunately, Crobat can usually attack multiple times in a row thanks to its incredibly high 130 base speed, giving you the chance to end battles quickly.

However, you'll be relying on physical moves like Aerial Ace, Dual Wingbeat, and Sky Attack, which aren't necessarily as good as a more powerful option, like Hurricane. Despite its limitations, Crobat will serve you well as you progress through the DLC, offering solid Poison-type coverage to keep your team selection flexible enough to build around its weaknesses.

Talonflame's BST is far from impressive, but luckily its high speed allows you to use lots of attacks to open up battles, which can be the difference between a quick victory and a drawn-out encounter. Unfortunately, this Fire and Flying-type bird is still waiting for a Mega Evolution, or it could have been one of the strongest Pokemon available in the Mega Dimension DLC.

Even so, its physical attack abilities are solid and will help you get the job done early in the DLC, but you'll quickly find more well-rounded options to choose from, especially if you don't mind working with a quadruple weakness to rock-type moves. Talonflame's movepool is easily its biggest draw, with access to tons of cover moves along with Dual Wingbeat and Sky Attack.

Corviknight represents something of an antithesis to Crobat, as this Pokémon is flying and steel-like, the latter of which is directly resistant to poison attacks. Also, while Crobat was a fast Pokemon focused on attacking as quickly and often as possible, Corviknight is much slower, and its main draw revolves around tanking hits and lowering opposing HP bars.

Corviknight's attacks may not be amazing, but this Pokemon is an excellent tank that can act as a pivot when your main attacker goes down in battle, while also offering you a chance to heal up and reload for a counterattack. Complete immunity to Poison and Ground attacks helps this Pokemon stand out as a wall, while an additional eight resistances ensure it will only be in danger against a few types.

Hawlucha is a straight upgrade over Flamigo, with the main difference being this Pokemon's access to a powerful Mega Evolution, which greatly improves its rather tame BST. Hawlucha improves its Attack to 137 when it Mega Evolves, with additional boosts to both of its defenses to ensure it has what it takes to tank a few hits and hang around long enough to finish off its opponents.

Mega Hawlucha's 600 BST does a lot of heavy lifting, but its access to a variety of physical moves, including Brick Break, Brave Bird, and its signature move, Flying Press, ensures it can hit many enemies hard. Mega Hawlucha can take on Rogue Mega Pokémon effectively and warrants inclusion in DLC from the start, thanks to its viability in main story battles.

Charizard may struggle against Rock-type attacks, but this Pokémon offers a major upgrade over Talonflame thanks to its superior BST and access to two Mega Evolutions. However, Mega Charizard Y is the obvious choice for supreme Flying-type profitability, as it gets a huge boost to its stats that allows it to hit hard with moves like Hurricane.

159 Special Attack is an incredibly strong starting point, and 100 or higher in both Defense and Speed makes Charizard stand out as one of the best Flying-type Pokemon out there. Take advantage of its massive Special Attack and watch opponents' Pokémon melt as Charizard barely takes a scratch, provided you keep it well away from Electric and Rock moves.

When it comes to Mega Pokemon options, Staraptor is easily one of the best new Mega Evolutions added to Mega Dimension, despite not blowing you away with its base form's BST. At Mega Evolving, Staraptor's Attack jumps to 140, with massive increases to its Defense, Special Defense, and Speed.

The ability to tank hits is key for Pokémon that can Mega Evolve, as you need to replenish their Mega Energy and Mega Evolve them again if they pass out in their Mega forms. Fortunately, the Staraptor becomes much more adept at surviving and doesn't suffer from any quadruple weaknesses.

Rayquaza flies far above the pack as the best Flying-type Pokémon in the Mega Dimension DLC, and arguably the best Pokémon among its Legendary peers. While its BST is already impressive, Mega Rayquaza can use powerful signature moves like Dragon Ascent and Hurricane to decimate Flying-weak enemies.

This Pokemon's only downside is how long it will take to encounter, as you only have access to it towards the end of the DLC's endgame. Despite the wait, Rayquaza's power is well worth it, as it outshines the competition in almost every category.
