The Sims Project X Leak is already drawing silly comparisons to Fortnite

An alleged first look at The Sims Project X's character designs has leaked, and it's already drawing some frankly ridiculous comparisons to Fortnite's art style.

As anyone who hoped for The Sims 5 knows, the series is in one bit of a strange place right now as it looks to finally be moving away from The Sims 4. We've been hearing about the mysterious multiplayer-focused Project Rene for quite some time and still don't really know what it's all about, while rumors of another single-player experience, Project X, have recently started doing the rounds as well.

Although an EA community manager shot down rumors that The Sims 4 would soon see its final expansion pack while a new game was put into development, it seems there was some truth to Project X. In fact, we may have just gotten our first leaked look at the unrevealed game, which is already drawing some head-banging comparisons.

A first look at The Sims Project X has seemingly leaked

No, it doesn't look like Fortnite, shut up

Earlier today, the Sims Community shared an interesting potential first look at The Sims Project X that was sent to them via an anonymous source. The site received an email with an image purportedly showing four Sims characters in the Project X art style, similar to The Sims 4, but with a little extra detail and polish.

EA needs to stop making excuses and make The Sims 5 already

Gamers would happily move to a new Sims game if EA weren't so stingy.

The image itself is marked as “TSX_MATERIAL_SIMS_EXPLORATORY”, indicating that it is a concept design from the game's development and may have changed during that time.

If it's legit, it's a minor look at Project X in the grand scheme of things that mostly serves to confirm that EA is cooking up something other than Project Rene. The most interesting thing about this whole story is the reaction the Sims Community got to the leaked image when they shared it on their Twitter.

Many of the responses to the alleged Project X leak immediately compare the art style to Fortnite because of its cartoonish approach to people, which is pretty much what happens to every game now that it's not going for realism. That's ignoring the fact that The Sims has always had this art style and came way before Fortnite, so it's really the opposite of something.

Yes, The Sims looks like Fortnite in a roundabout way, but more importantly it just looks like The Sims. If the Project X image is legit and not fake, then it's a good sign that EA isn't drastically changing the series' identity.
