The Shadow Of The Colossus screenplay is complete, just waiting for funding

Summary

  • Director Andrés Muschietti plans to bring the Shadow of the Colossus film project back to life after 10 years.

  • Muschietti faces hurdles in financing the project and needs studio support due to the potentially high budget.

  • The director's desire for a $200 million budget may be unrealistic; other successful Sony adaptations had smaller budgets.

In 2009, Sony announced a Shadow of the Colossus movie based on the Team ICO classic of the same name. A couple of director changes later, and in 2014 Andrés Muschietti (It, The Flash) was confirmed as the head of the project. Since then, however, nothing.

The less we know about Fumito Ueda's new game the better

I have so many questions about Fumito Ueda's Project Robot, and there is no sign of any answers.

That was until now, when the Argentinian director gave a positive status update on the project to Radio TU, a radio station in his home country.

Originally reported by Reconectados, Muschietti told the station, “The film has been in development for 10 years, and now the opportunity to make it is opening up,” stressing that it was not “an abandoned project by any means.”

Despite admitting he was not a big player, Muschietti called Shadow of the Colossus a “masterpiece” and said of his project that “I love that movie, there's a script I like a lot.”

The film has been in development for 10 years and now the opportunity to make it opens up,

Unfortunately, full production on the film has not yet begun, with financing being Muschietti's biggest hurdle. “There are factors that have nothing to do with your hobby and the desire to do it, but with how popular an intellectual property like this is,” he said.

“Shadow of the Colossus is a cult game, but to make a good movie, there's a studio that puts the numbers and says how much it's worth to give the director $200, $150, or $100 million. There are different versions of the movie, and of course do I want them to give me 200 million, but this is another factor to consider.”

I want them to give me 200 million, but this is another factor to consider.

A $200 million budget may be wishful thinking on the part of the director for a project that would be seen as risky by investors. For context, Deadpool & Wolverine, a much safer bet, also had a budget of $200 million, and another PlayStation adaptation, Uncharted, had a budget of $120 million.

However, Sony and PlayStation are making much more progress with their cross-media productions, with Horizon Zero Dawn and Helldivers movies recently announced, so it will be interesting to see if, now that Muschietti has resurrected the project, some budget might be available from that.
