The PS5 has just received a major new update

Sony has surprised fans with a brand new update for PlayStation 5which brings some new features to the console's Welcome Hub. While there aren't any other changes beyond updates to the PlayStation 5 Welcome Hub, it still gives fans hungry for more customization options to check out, including a new dynamic background that adapts to the seasons and a widget that displays a user's latest game stats.

Back in September 2024, a new PlayStation 5 update added the Welcome Hub, a feature that lets players customize their console experience with widgets, wallpapers, and more. Following the launch of the 24.06-10.00.00 update last year, PlayStation 5 users are now greeted by the Welcome Hub when they turn on their console. From here, players can add, remove or resize widgets and change the background of the hub. This allows players to get “at a glance” information, such as control battery, online friends, wish list, trophies and much more.

PS4 PS5 consoles on cosmic background

PS5's first 5 years of gaming VS PS4's at this point in their life cycle (and the clear winner)

The PS5 has been on the market for nearly five years now, which begs the question: how does it compare to the PS4, its best-selling predecessor?

PlayStation 5's Welcome Hub is getting a new update

Despite being over a year old, the PS5's Welcome Hub has received minimal updates. Thankfully, that has now changed, as a new update is now available for users worldwide with some new features to check out. Not only does the update add a new dynamic background that changes throughout the year, but it also introduces a new widget in the Welcome Hub that lets players see their latest game stats at a glance. The widget will display information about a user's most recently played games, including total hours played, number of sessions, trophies earned, and more. So for those who have been obsessing over ARC Raidersyou can now quickly see how long you have spent the top page.

Unfortunately, this still isn't the kind of adaptation fans have been asking for. Unlike the days of the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, the PS5 does not allow themes outside of the classic PlayStations that were first introduced for the PS1's 30th anniversary. These themes were first rolled out in December 2024, but were removed in January 2025 as Sony only intended them to be available for a limited time. However, after a huge amount of requests from fans, they came back in April and are now available permanently.

The PS5 received a handy new update back in October, with a useful new feature that allowed users to check the serial number of their controllers and console directly from Settings. While it wasn't a groundbreaking addition, being able to check the console's serial number without having to physically examine the PS5 itself is handy. And it's also better than the usual stability improvements that PS5 users have adapted to.
