According to a new rumor, PlayStation 5 will see a significant price increase in Europe. Released in 2020, the PlayStation 5 launched around the same time as the Xbox Series X. Despite being released so close to Microsoft's console, the PS5 quickly established itself as the preferred platform for playing the biggest releases of the current console generation. Much of that is due to the system's range of exclusive first-party products, including Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Astro Botand Ghost of Yotei.
This year will be the sixth anniversary of the PS5, but it doesn't look like Sony will be moving on to the next generation anytime soon. Rumors had suggested a release window for Sony's next system in 2027, but analysts are now predicting that the PS6 might not arrive until 2028 or 2029. If true, it may disappoint some PlayStation fans, but the high cost of RAM could make it difficult to launch a new system. The PS5 was notoriously difficult to find in the system's first year, and Sony may want to avoid a repeat situation. On the bright side, a delay for the PS6 would allow gamers to get more use out of the current system.

PS5's apparent price hike
In a post on Twitter, user GyoJvfr claims that the PS5 will see a price increase in Europe. The leaker says the PS5 Slim will go up to €649.99, while the PS5 Pro jumps up to €899.99. After conversion, that translates to around $750 for the slim model and more than $1000 for the PS5 Pro. The PS5 Pro cost €799.99 when it launched in Europe, so this would be quite a price hike. Additionally, GyoJvfr claims that the PS5 portal goes up to €249.99, which converts to almost $290. The leaker has not been able to pinpoint when these price increases will take effect, but those planning to purchase a PS5 in the near future may want to keep a potential price increase in mind.

In the past, the price of video game consoles used to drop over time, as demand decreased and the systems became cheaper to manufacture. Those who waited to upgrade from the previous console generation were often rewarded with both cheaper hardware and discounted games. However, this has not been the case in recent years, as video game makers compete with other companies for resources. Between RAM shortages, tariffs and increases in oil costs, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are all struggling with how to deal with higher costs and lower margins. Microsoft has had to raise the price of Xbox consoles several times, with the Xbox Series X now costing about $150 more than it did in 2020.
As of now, Sony has yet to confirm the leaked price increases. With everything going on in the video game industry right now, it's easy to assume that these price increases are accurate, but there's no way to be sure. If Sony raises the price of the PS5 in Europe, it is not known if there could be a similar price jump in North America, but it is possible. With high profile games such as Grand Theft Auto 6 and Marvel's Wolverine coming to the PS5 this year, some gamers may have to dig deep into their pockets to afford a console that can play them. Of course, others may choose to continue playing whatever system they have at the moment, whether it's a base model PS5 or even a PS4. All of these increases make it much harder to justify purchases, and many people can be priced out of the hobby as a result.
