The old country's free driving mode is depressing

Mafia: The old country was explicitly marketed as a smaller, linear game in line with previous items in the series, as opposed to an open world game like Mafia 3. Instead of giving you a spreading map to explore and make side content, the game is more focused. You can still explore your immediate surroundings during assignments and extend the map more completely in its free roam mode, but there is not much to do within that world other than finding collectors.

This was the point of the old country. Mafia 3's game with an open world was not very well received and criticized by many for being repetitive and inflated, which is a common criticism for the genre. Hanger 13 decided that the old country would go back to the approach for previous games, which gives players a focused and cinematic experience instead of letting them be distracted by foreign content that is just not so fun or engaging.

However, it turns out that Hanger 13 will add a free driving position to the old country sometime in the future. What is free ride, and why is it such a disappointing update?

Free ride is not really an open world

Mafia The Old Land Mystery Fox and Enzo.

Hanger 13 has announced that a free driving mode is on the way, but it is not entirely clear What This mode will include. The announcement says “expect some new activities and games and arrive for free for all players in the coming months”, but there are no details.

That said, we do know that mafia and mafia: definitive edition, the remaster of the original mafia, had free ride modes, but the remaster's version is like -like to what we should be expecting given that it it launched in 2020. In the remaster, the free ride mode was was was was was unlock Players Play Timed Phone Booth Missions, Races, and Taxi Missions, As Well as Change The Time of Day and Weather.

In that sense, I don't think the old country's free driving position will be a full -fledged open world. It is likely to add some things you can when you are time away with-I imagine that races will be included-but it will in no way be something similar to big triple-a-game known for their reactive, interesting open worlds like Red Dead Redemption 2 or The Witcher 3.

But why care about an open world situation at all?

Dons Torisi and Gallante meet Baron Fontanella in Mafia: the old country.

This is an optional, free mode, probably added for players who want an incentive to explore the beautiful world with which Hanger 13 has created to tell their story. In itself, a studio that decides to give its players more ways to interact with the game is not a bad thing.

Open-World Games are considered to be the norm for RPG nowadays-line-line games is considered by many to be outdated, relics from the past that developers should move away from. But others, like me, still see value in linear RPG. I do not very much like side content unless it adds the world building, and I think that the checklist's structure for most open world assignments is to be extremely outdated and time -cut off. The old country is a focused story that does not throw meaningless side content at me, disturbing the pace of the story, and I appreciate it.

Why should a game explicitly linear and designed for linear games must integrate games from a completely different game genre? It is already at a lower price point because of its shorter length and lack of an open world, and the free driving position, while offering extra things to do, is unlikely to add as much to what the game already has to offer. It feels like it is trying to increase its value proposal by admitting that yes, open-world games have more content, and we try to add some so players will stop saying that our open world is dead and empty.

It is unlikely that people who liked Mafia 3's open world will find something similar in this new free driving position, and people who want side content to add to overall history will probably not be satisfied either. It's a shame that even linear games fall for the false idea that a game must have an open world content to be worth playing.
