The Masquerade is ripe for a video game collaboration

While the dark appeal of vampire fiction has technically attracted gothic horror fans for centuries, Vampire: The Masquerade has successfully translated the concept into the tabletop RPG format. With more bloodsucking creatures of the night gaining prominence in media in recent years, the only other franchise of similar status currently is the ever-growing Castlevania. Both series are giants in their respective mediums despite their vast differences, but their overlapping themes and lore would make for a crossover with Vampire: The Masquerade just natural.

As an action-heavy video game series versus a narrative-driven TTRPG, these IPs contrast each other as two pillars of long-running vampire media. A resurgence in recent years through Netflix Castlevania series and several guest appearances in games have seen the Konami property grow in profile, while VTM have maintained consistent editions that can support a new sourcebook based on a version other than an expanded myth.

Vampire Survivors' Ode to Castlevania DLC should only be the tip of the iceberg

Vampire Survivors just released an incredibly impressive Castlevania DLC, but it should only mark the beginning of its vampire-related crossovers.

Castlevania's latest batch of tie-ins shouldn't miss Vampire: The Masquerade

To unite two enduring Gothic legacies

Delivering atmospheric tales of the Belmont clan's fight against Dracula since the 1980s, Castlevania has retained a role as the hallmark of an entire genre. After having characters in the Dead in daylightpp Castlevania chapters and a whole larger content package for Vampire Survivorit is safe to say that this franchise has maintained its relevance in modern times by adapting to new developments. Between a huge backlog of games across console generations and a Netflix show still running, Castlevania continues to keep vampires in the spotlight.

Of all the different approaches to lore in all interpretations, VTM has potentially maintained the richest and most comprehensive version of a vampire backstory. With ancient origins from Caine and many clans that have since descended from that starting point, the franchise has combined elements of everything from Bram Stoker's Dracula to Anne Rice's novels. If yet another new take on vampire lore is folded into World of Darkness, it could provide a welcome boost to its usual appeal.

A Castlevania-inspired sourcebook for Vampire: The Masquerade has two obvious paths to take

Netflix's Ongoing Castlevania: Nocturne Lore provides recognizable inspiration

As the successful sequel to the original edition of the series, Castlevania: Nocturne's 1792 setting offers a wealth of reference points for VTM to interpret. The political turmoil of eighteenth-century Europe is full of the kind of drama that is meant to drive Masquerades plot, and actors like Richter, Annette or Alucard could be reimagined as NPCs in conjunction with RPG mechanics. Existing VTM dietary supplements such as In memoriam has already explored the depths of historical flashbacks in previous Earth eras, so the prospect of a period piece is nothing new for the IP. A century-old Alucard's internal struggle alone, for example, is a conflict ripe for the typical drama the Kindred tend to face. Depending on how the timeline is exploited, there is even a chance for compelling interplay between past and present through immortal Castlevania characters that make it to the present day.

Castlevania's wider story is a deep well of source material

The franchise's documented eras range from Simon Belmont's medieval adventures to Soma Cruz's future in the Castlevaniawhich leaves plenty of time frames to explore even outside of the foundation of the Netflix adaptation. The varying assumptions about Dracula's influence in these different scenarios provide enough angles for several new vampire clans to explain the crossover, or even new hunter archetypes based on the Belmonts. Alternatively, if a story closer to Dracula's backstory is ultimately depicted, Brotherhood of Light could be an option.
