Death by browsing is the name of the latest game by legendary developer Ron Gilbert. Was revealed during the 2025 edition of Gamescom, Death by browsing is currently only confirmed for PC.
Ron Gilbert is an American developer who is best known as the Creator of Monkey series. He began his career at Lucasfilm game in the 1980s and has over 100 points to his name, including work at MadmanThe Total Holocaust: Kärnan preparednessThe Ollo at Sunny Valley Fairand The great big castle. Most recently, the industry veteran was collaborated and directed and wrote Return to Monkey IslandThe sixth part of his most popular franchise debuted in 2022.
Gilbert's latest project was revealed during Gamescom 2025 Opening night live in the form of Death by browsing. Behind the whimsical name is a chaotic experience that combines parts of Roguelike and Bullet Hell Games. Moniker himself refers to the game's perspective, as Death by browsing will have players moving through vertically rolling environments. Retreat will not be an option as Grim Reaper will always be hot on the heels and want to finish their driving.
The presence of Grim Reaper reflects the game's wider themes, as Death by browsing Located in Purgatory, an unusual place that appears to be a merger of various mythologies' interpretations of death and the afterlife. Souls caught there have to pay 10,000 gold pieces to a ferry, described in the game as an “unreasonable” fee before moving on. In order to raise the sum, they must carry out several runs through the ever -changing world of Skjärsild and establish the foundation for Death by browsingRoguelike gameplay loop.
Death by browsing will contain several playable characters, retro pixel art graphics and online top lists. Gilbert's stamp on the game will be materialized in the form of white, heavy-in-cheek dialogue. While players will constantly be asked to continue running upwards, announcing the trailer shows to make so blind may not guarantee security, as Grim Reaper can also appear from above.
Before its premiere of Gamescom 2025, Death by browsing was teased by Gilbert himself at the end of 2024, when he said that his studio, terrible Toybox, planned to launch it in the coming months. While this launch goal has clearly slipped since then, the company's official website is currently listing Death by browsing as planned for a late 2025 edition. The upcoming title, which will be published by MicroPrase Software, has so far only been announced for PC.
