The Epic Games Store free game for January 22 is Grand Theft Auto meets Monty Python and the Holy Grail

If it's a thing Epic Games Store is always good because, it provides variety with its free games every week. In general, it is very rare to see the same genre repeated for several weeks in a row with the Epic Games Store free games. In 2026 alone, the Epic Games Store has already offered a tower defense game, a PvPvE multiplayer Sci-Fi shooter, and a grand strategy game with a historical setting.

Once again, the Epic Games Store is getting ready to shake things up. On January 22, 2026, the Epic Games Store offers a free game unlike anything users have redeemed in recent months, one that takes on the absurd, tongue-in-cheek humor Monty Python and the Holy Grail and mixes it with the frantic top-down action of classic Grand Theft Auto. Said games are called Rustlingand here's what you should know about the latest Epic freebie.

The main features of Rustler:

  • Open world
  • Top-down action game
  • “Historically inaccurate” medieval setting
  • Focuses on comedy and pop culture references

Originally released in August 2021, Rustling sees players take on the role of 'The Guy', a medieval peasant seeking happiness and glory in a poor and unforgiving world, but also one filled with pop culture references and crude gags. With a trusty bard by their side, players can engage in all sorts of unbeatable open-world activities, from hunting witches to participating and backstabbing their way through the Grand Tournament.

When Rustling first hitting store shelves in 2021, it wasn't met with the best critical reception. Rustling currently sits at a 63 Top Critic Average on OpenCritic, with only 26% of critics recommending the game. On the lower end of the spectrum, reviews criticized Rustlings controls, technical performance and excessive reliance on cruel humor. In the higher part, some shops were praised Rustlings satire and the general non-serious tone that permeates the entire experience.

But while the Epic Games Store's January 22nd freebie might not have been a big hit with critics back in 2021, that shouldn't deter some groups from picking up the game, especially when there's no price tag. Those looking for an absurd sandbox to just mess around for a few hours will surely have fun Rustlingand that will surely be the case if they are also fans of Monty Python and Grand Theft Auto.

Rustler borrows the Top-Down gameplay from classic Grand Theft Auto

Rustling wears his Grand Theft Auto influences on the sleeve, so much so that the game's official subtitle (on some storefronts) is “Grand Theft Horse”. Played from a top-down perspective, Rustling aims to capture the spirit of the first Grand Theft Auto game, albeit in a completely different environment. As “The Guy”, players are given free reign over a sizable open world and have access to a wide range of medieval weapons, including spears, swords and crossbows. Players can also steal horses and hijack wagons, with the latter mode of transportation even coming with a drift mechanic.

Fixed Rustling has a story mode, it's the chaos of the open world that's really the meat and potatoes of the whole experience. Along with the above mentioned activities, RustlingThe official EGS description talks about throwing cows into the air, dressing up to death and going on a murderous rampage through a medieval town. It may not offer the most robust set of mechanics or the most innovative gameplay loop, but Rustling perhaps scratching that chaotic itch that currently lies unfulfilled from series like Grand Theft Auto and Saint's Row.

Rustler's tone is inspired by Monty Python and the Holy Grail

If it is not already clear from the description of its game loop, Rustling is not a serious game. In fact, it prides itself on how frivolous it really is. IN Rustlings official description on the Epic Games Store states that the game has an “inappropriate Monty Python-inspired humor,” and it's evident at every turn while playing the game. The skill tree is filled with corny puns, the main character is humorously obnoxious, and parodies of iconic ones GTA features are absolutely everywhere, like a “Pimp-a-Horse” barn that pops up in the tutorial location. Again, Rustling may not live up to the heights of the subjects it tries to imitate, but its absurd and satirical tone is sure to elicit at least a laugh or two.
