Mother 3

So dark, it remained a Japanese exclusive (OK, not really, but the game is dark)

The holy grail of JRPGs that were never released outside of Japan, Mother 3 is the last entry in the influential Mother/Grounded series, which has always had a knack for subverting genre expectations. “Dark” might not be the right description for this game as a whole, but it certainly fits the intro.

Mother 3 begins with the annihilation of a village by a creepy and almost Lovecraftian force, setting up the boy protagonist's quest for revenge for the rest of the story. Despite a rather colorful art style, Mother 3 maintains a tense and unsettling atmosphere, rarely letting up for a rest. As the campaign progresses, things gradually get worse and a sense of hopelessness sets in.

Dragon Guard

Dark, twisted and simply unsettling

Honestly, everyone Dragon Guard and Nier games qualify for this discussion, as they are all dark, grim, and (usually) unapologetically weird. To avoid including all five entries, let's just highlight the original from 2003, a game that is carried entirely by its storytelling and characters. Set during an ongoing war between the Empire and the Union, the story casts you as the latter's prince, willing to do anything to exact bloody revenge on the Empire.

On paper, this premise sounds pretty typical for a JRPG, but Dragon Guard takes things in a different direction by not portraying Caim as an ultimately noble hero, but rather a tragic figure consumed by his vendetta. He is ready to lose himself, and he will. Nowadays, Dragon Guard may be difficult to fully appreciate due to its gameplay, but the story is still compelling enough to warrant a playthrough (or watch the cutscenes online).
