Although it is nice when games give you original stories and characters, such as The Last of Us, Alan Wake, Death Stranding and Cyberpunk 2077, it is also cool to see games inspired by the classic fairy tales that we all loved to read as children. Little Red Riding Hood, Alice in Wonderland, Pinocchio, Askepott, Hansel and Gretel and Snow White were never as unique as in these games.

Path
Little Red Riding Hood is the story used as the prerequisite for Tale of Tales' The Path, but with a unique spin. Instead of just a small red, there are six sisters on their way to Grandma's house through the forest, where they have to stick to the road. The forest starts beautiful and wonderful, and the title card crossing is also brilliantly completed, but things only get darker from there.
When you reach your grandmother's house, it is when this becomes an eerie psychological horror game, because the character design, lighting, tone and mood change to some silent hill-esque. The road plays more as a third person narrative hiking simulator without battle and only mechanics for object collection. You get to play the story from each sister's perspective, and the atmospheric soundtrack is from ex-swans member Jarboe.

Hansel and Gretel
Hansel and Gretel are a free to play 2D Pixel Art Adventure Puzzle Game based on the Grimm brothers of the same name. There have been many iterations of this story in film, including the darker arthouse from Longlegs director Osgood Perkins 2020 and the Gory R-ranked Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. This game stays closer to the classic iteration, with the witch's house made from delicious chocolate cakes and cake and a trace of clubs leading to the entrance.

This is a fairly short little adventure, but a filled with object collection, puzzle and exploration, with atmospheric forests and an eerie witch who wants to eat this young brother and sister. There is also the option for local co-op, as you and your friend can take control of both Hansel and Gretel in this game.

American McGee's Grimm
A more well -known developer who takes on the fairy tales about the Grimm brothers is none other than American McGee, best known for Dark Alice in Wonderland Games. Grimm is actually an episodic video game, a total of 23 episodes in all and almost 12 hours of play for the main history alone. Each section will cover a specific story from Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm.
Hansel and Gretel are certainly here, along with Red Riding Hood, ash pots, Jack and Beanstalk, but there is a darker twist. You do not play through these fairy tales as the characters themselves, but rather an evil magic protagonist named Grimm, who comes into these worlds to destroy them by making them more nasty by doing devastation and filling “Dark-o-Meter.”

Ash
As the title suggests, Cinder is a play on the story of ash pots, but less so the happy Disney version of the character, nor as scary as the ugly step sister version. In this visual Roman style game, depending on your choices, you can make ash pots (lovingly called 'Cinder' for his red hair) into an evil protagonist in the story.
The goal of this game is actually to break the classic story that everyone knows and loves by taking responsibility for the story itself along any number of roads, almost like the American McGee did with Grimm, but in a more elegant and narrative drive. There is an original time on the character designs, with a very unique fantasy aesthetic, and the environmental art used for the settings is all wonderful.

Kiss in boots
Puss in Boots is an Italian origin from the 16th century by Giovanni Francesco Straparola, who has been the fan favorite character in the Shrek films, expressed by Antonio Banderas, and received spin-off films as 202's The Last Wish (often considered the best iteration). The 2011 game, puss in boots, is an adaptation of the original standalone spin-off movie of the same name.

Believe it or not, Swordfighting Combat Mechanics is actually quite fun and captures the character's vibe, with kiss even crawling on their enemies and claws and claw away on them (the benefits of playing an anthropomor cat). There are also stealth sections incorporated. As it follows the story of the 2011 movie, you will meet Humpty Dumpty and Jack and Jill while looking for magic beans from Jack and Beanstalk.

Woolfe: The Red Hood Diaries
Another game of red hood theme is Woolfe: The Red Hood Diaries, which was surprisingly published by the developer of the Sniper Elite series and Alien versus Predator Games, Rebellion. This is an action platform game where Little Red is a Vigilante-type main character, mainly her own fairy tale version of DC's Red Hood, and gets to meet various fairy tales, including Pied Piper and Big Bad Wolf (Stylized BB Woolfe).
The game combines traditional hack-and-slash battle with 2.5D-side-scoling platforms, almost related to the last case of Benedict Fox, American McGee's Alice and Little Nightmares, but with a lively imaginative-inspired environment. This version of Red Riding Hood is equipped with an ax to hack away on enemies with flurries of attacks, all in search of finding the truth behind his father's death and deviating from the original story.

Bramble: The Mountain King
Bramble: The Mountain King is another dark, horror -inspired fairy tale game. It is based on Scandinavian folklore and is described as a “gloomy adventure.” Located in Bramble's land, this title follows a little boy named Olle on a quest to save his sister, who is kidnapped by a troll. On his journey, Olle meets nightly landscapes with horrible creatures from Nordic myth.
It is an ominous adventure game similar to small nightmares, where you solve puzzles and have to avoid enemies that are much larger than you, but where you can also die in horrible ways. There are antagonistic figures such as Näcken, a water spirit that you have to sprint past the lily pillows, or later forest raws, a shapeshifter that attracts men to their deaths. The titular antagonist, Mountain King, also comes from the fables.

American McGee's Alice games take on a psychological horror theme, where the young Alice Liddell is psychological scar and engaged in a mental hospital after losing her parents in a house fire and fled to Wonderland via her main space at the request of her toys coming to life. Everything gets twisted in this version of Wonderland, which even Vorpal Blade weapon which is now a kitchen knife and must fight against intense managers.

Ravenswatch is an Indie Roguelike game that feels very reminiscent of Hades 2 from the same developer behind the Curse of the Dead Gods. But instead of Greek mythology, you have characters from all kinds of legends and fairy tales. These include Little Red Riding Hood (which can be transformed into a werewolf), the snow queen from Hans Christian Andersen, Beowulf, Sun Wukong, Geppetto, Aladdin, Pied Piper and more.
The story is that all these characters must come together to help the safe country by Reverie from being exceeded by the creatures made by the nightmare. You will encounter other famous secured NPCs in this area, such as Sinbad, the three little pigs and even Sandman (yes, the dream retailer himself). You can also go on runs with up to four players in Co-op.
