Steam starts removing games after updating their publication rules

July 16, Steam Updated rules on gaming publishers to include a clause that prohibits content in violation of any standards specified by Steam's payment processors, banks or network providers. After the rule change, Steam has removed some adult -oriented games from its store that violates the updated guidelines.

The update came at a hectic time for the computer's top shop. Earlier in July, some Steam users reported that they could hide mature content warnings that appear when surfing the platform. This trait enables users to circumvent a pop-up that regularly appears and asks for a date of birth to see games that contain violence, sexual content or other tags that would justify a mature rating. Although the methods of hiding mature content warnings on steam are unclear, it remains to be seen whether Valve will make this a global function or if it will be specific to some countries or territories as a user option.

Report reveals how many new Steam Games use generative AI

A new report reveals that a growing proportion of Steam games are now using generative AI, including several popular independent titles.

While Steam still contains an archive of only adult games, the store front begins to strike down on specific content that game developers may publish. As reported by GameSpark (and translated by Automaton), Valve has updated Steamworks Onboarding rules and guidelines on the content that can be distributed on the store. While rules that prohibit games that contain hate speeches, defamatory statements or similarly unregiated content from being published on Steam have long been in place, a 15th rule that is aimed at specific adult content was added. According to the updated Steam rules, this change applies to “content that may violate the rules and standards specified by Steam's payment processors and related card networks and banks, or suppliers of internet networks.” However, it is not clear how narrow or largely this rule will apply to mature games.

Steam's updated rules are aimed at specific adult content

  • Steam's latest rule change prohibits games that violate a payment processor's terms from being published.

  • The move is specifically aimed at games with sexually explicit content and similar tags only adults.

  • Some games have since been removed from Steam after the rule's assumption.

  • It is unclear how narrowly or largely steam or its payment processors will apply this rule.

According to SteamDB's event history page, Steam has already begun to remove various games with explicit sexual content and similar labels from the platform after the implementation of the rule. This movement is in line with a similar attitude recently taken by Nintendo to compile its Eshop. The Nintendo Switch 2 developer and publishing portal were updated on June 5 to prohibit spam content and products that “damage the Nintendo brand” from being published at each regional ESHOP store from case.

Although games that only earn the notorious adults (AO) rating have largely been banned or made difficult to obtain, some have found a home on steam and similar stores. Only time will show how many games will be affected by Steam's new guidelines.
