Do you remember Starfield? Yeah, me neither, but Bethesda has promised that work on the game's post-launch support is still ongoing, with a second expansion presumably in the works alongside a PS5 version. We don't know exactly when Bethesda plans to release these, but several reports have linked them to a 2026 launch.
That said, we really don't know exactly what Starfield has in store for us anymore, as the game hasn't exactly set the world on fire since its release back in 2023. Its first expansion, Shattered Space, went down relatively okay, but was just as much of a flash in the pan as the base game was. To be honest, I'm surprised that Bethesda is still willing to support the title, what with The Elder Scrolls 6 now constantly on people's minds. It's still going away, though, and according to an insider, the game's next update could be one to watch out for.
Starfield's next update will reportedly be equivalent to Phantom Liberty
According to a tweet from notable Xbox insider Septic_Sauce earlier this week, Starfield's next update will be “a big one,” and that it will likely be released alongside the game's launch on PS5. More interestingly, this insider seems to claim that this mysterious update will be Starfield's equivalent of Cyberpunk 2077's wildly popular Phantom Liberty expansion
Interview: Craig Sechler on returning as the adoring fan in Starfield
We spoke to Craig Sechler about reprising his role as The Adoring Fan after 17 years.
Septic_Sauce doesn't elaborate on exactly what this means, whether they mean sheer quality or the scope and ambition of the update, so it's pretty safe to take this information with a grain of salt right now. It's also worth noting that Septic_Sauce doesn't have the best track record of all the insiders out there, and Starfield's next update being “a big one” is a pretty safe point that anyone could really throw out.
That said, Starfield hasn't had a decent update in quite a while, which suggests the next one could be pretty chunky. Whether it will match the quality of Phantom Liberty remains to be seen, but if Bethesda somehow pulls off that feat and does so alongside the game's launch on a brand new platform, it could give Starfield another shot at life.
