PlayStation patent hints at new control feature
A recently published patent application from Sony is giving the public a look at a potential new control feature that could massively change gaming on the PlayStation.
According to a patent originally filed in June 2024 and just published on January 2, 2025, Sony is working on a gun mount accessory that would allow gamers to add a “trigger” to an existing DualSense controller. The Sony PlayStation DualSense controller series has a number of immersive features, including haptic feedback, and it seems the company is working to add another layer of realism to gameplay for its hardware users. Sony's patented gun “trigger” attachment would connect to the underside of the DualSense controller, allowing players to hold the modified controller sideways and use the space between the R1 and R2 buttons as an aim. This attachment would add an extra dimension of immersion to the shooter, especially in FPS titles or action-adventure games, although there is currently no guarantee that this accessory will be made available to consumers.

Figures 14 and 15 of the Sony DualSense controller gun accessory patent show how the modified hardware unit would be held similar to a handgun. Looking at Figure 3, fans see exactly how the add-on would attach to the underside of the DualSense controller. Figures 12 and 13 show how the gun mount can be paired with a VR headset and other potential accessories, although these other items pictured are not named or detailed elsewhere in this specific patent. As is the case with other exciting Sony patents for video game technology, gamers will want to wait for an official announcement before expecting to see this gun mount accessory on the market anytime soon.
Video game companies continue to explore new possibilities for gaming hardware, from the highly anticipated next-generation consoles to enhancements and accessories for existing accessories, such as controllers. Interested fans will want to keep an eye out for any announcements from Sony regarding its recent patent publications and future applications.
