Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Review Summary

Summary

  • The reviews are coming for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 before it hits theaters this weekend.

  • Jim Carrey has received the bulk of the praise for playing two roles in the film through the addition of Gerald Robotnik.

  • Despite the modest score, it appears that Sonic 3 is just as good, if not marginally better than the previous two films.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 hits theaters this weekend and a lucky few people have already gotten the chance to see the threequel early so they can tell the rest of the world if it's any good or not. Reviews for Sonic 3 are now live with various sites and outlets sharing their thoughts and scores, and it looks like the third film in the series is just as good, if not better, than the two that have come before it.

Jim Carrey has received high praise from some of Sonic 3's early reviewers, perhaps unsurprisingly since the Hollywood veteran plays two characters in the latest film as opposed to just one. GamesRadar writes that Carrey “steals the film as two Robotniks”. It also praises Ben Schwartz for being consistently funny as Sonic, something that has been a common thread throughout the trilogy, but adds that Keanu Reeves' Shadow is wasted, disappointing to hear as this film will bring down the curtain on the Year of the Shadow.

Five more figures have been revealed, including a new Super Sonic figure surrounding the hedgehog with all seven Chaos Emeralds.

Polygon also showered Carrey with praise for his performance as both Ivo Robotnik and the character's grandfather, Gerald Robotnik. Surprised that Carrey has never been asked to play two roles in the same movie before, Polygon astutely points out that Carrey pulls off a double act while largely being in a room all by himself. Even when he's not talking to himself, most of the other characters he shares the screen with are put in the post.

Sonic 3 reviews are in

Sounds like more of the same in the best possible way

Not many of Sonic 3's reviews have received a solid rating, which may be why it doesn't yet have a rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, some of the sites that have scored the film at this stage – IGN, GamesRadar and The Guardian among them – have all given Sonic 3 a three out of five. That might not seem very promising, but it would be consistent with the scores awarded to the two films to have come before it, both of which were at less than 70 percent on the Tomatometer.

GamingBible claims that Sonic 3 is the best entry yet in the Sonic movie series, and it seems likely that even if some people who had the chance to see it before are lukewarm on what it has to offer, if you liked the first two movies, and you like Sonic, you will enjoy this movie. It seems almost inevitable that there's more to come too with reviews seemingly confirming the leaked end credits scene teasing what comes next is probably the real deal.
