Someone bought an Xbox 360 and it turned out to be a Rockstar Games Devkit

One lucky Xbox fan was shocked to discover that a used Xbox 360 they recently bought turned out to be a development kit used by Rockstar games for GTA 4. Originally based in New York City, the studio has grown into one of the most iconic studios in gaming since its founding in 1998, known worldwide for franchises such as Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption. Rockstar has expanded globally since its early days, with studios all over the world managing the many different properties under the Rockstar umbrella. However, certain branches of the company have become particularly beloved by fans.

Among Rockstar Games' many subsidiaries, Rockstar North is easily one of the most well-known to fans. The Edinburgh-based development studio is usually the main studio for new Grand Theft Auto games, which serves as the sole studio behind most of the franchise's main series entries. Rockstar North also often helps with spin-off development, along with Rockstar San Diego on the original Red Dead Redemption and Rockstar Leeds on GTA spin-offs. Now, a fan has unexpectedly stumbled upon a piece of Rockstar North history at a recent car sale.

Take-Two CEO Makes Bold Claims About Grand Theft Auto 6

With the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 now just eight months away, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick is making a bold claim about the highly anticipated title.

One lucky fan's used Xbox 360 came with a Rockstar Devkit

GTA fan Janmatant shared his unlikely story on GTAForums, an online community dedicated to the franchise. The user claimed they bought the console used from a car dealership in the UK and paid only £5 for the console. The console still had the original Rockstar stamp on the hard drive and came packaged with a beta version of the Grand Theft Auto 4. The beta included several features from the game's full release, including various GTA radio stations with songs that were later cut from the final game, a deleted zombie minigame, and even a model of the ferry from GTA 4first trailer.

The amazing discovery also came with the revelation of what GTA hell plan to do with devkit. The GTAForums user confirmed that they intend to resell the console, and already have some hardcore fans offering a staggering £800 to own the Rockstar development kit. The user shared some images from the console in addition to the GTA beta files, including a look at the Xshell launcher, which is only used in Xbox 360 dev kits. The beta version for Grand Theft Auto 4 included in the development pack even gives an idea of the timeframe for the build, with fans spotting an executable in GTA 4 build dating back to September 2007, roughly seven months before release.

The unbelievable GTA 4 find saw a lot of interest from fans for the cut content included in the game. The beta version included several songs that were not included in the final version of the game, including music from Run DMC, Daddy Yankee, and The Who, among others. The zombie minigame was also a big find for fans, with the minigame likely cut well before the game's release. The game mode could potentially have served as inspiration for another future Rockstar game, with Red Dead Redemption receives a full zombie DLC in Undead Nightmare.

The piece of Rockstar Games history emerged as the studio prepares for one of its biggest releases ever. Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently scheduled to officially launch on November 19, after being delayed several times since its official reveal in 2023. GTA 6 will bring fans back to tropical Vice City for the first time since 2006 Vice City Storieswith the game being one of the most anticipated new releases in gaming. GTA 6 is slated to be another landmark for Rockstar, offering fans a next generation Grand Theft Auto experience.
