We have had Hollow Knight: Silksong for almost two weeks, and after getting enough time to get a grip on it, the reviews for the Metroidvania follower are still examining. There are enough them out there now to measure exactly where silksong will fall into the race to be 2025's game of the year and, surprisingly, that no one, it is right there on Tippy.
With 45 Silksong reviews on OpenCritic, including one from our very own Josh Robertson, who assigned the game a 4/5, Team Cherry's highly awaited sequel has a point of 92. Not only is it two points higher than its critically acclaimed predecessor, but it is tied with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's high points, a game that many believe already has this year's Game of the Year award locked with three months to go.
Silksong is one of the best games of the year despite its punishment difficulties
“Its managerial battles are exciting and challenging, its world is a wonderful wonder to explore, its unpredictable art design is impeccable and everything else if it looks and sounds fantastic,” reads our review. The only less negative that loses its point from a perfect five to a still very impressive four is that its punishment can sometimes feel “disgusting”.
Silksong's difficulties, and whether it is a fair criticism of a video game and is worth beating points to its review score, has been a threat button subject during the first ten days of the game. VGC gave Silksong a 3/5, notes that its difficulties make more tiring than challenging sometimes, and that these nails negatively affect the game's stimulation.
There are many perfect points for silksong, of course, which is why it sat down on a 92. Screenrant gave Silksong a 10/10, which pointed to its masterful Boss fight as one of the reasons it got such a high score and framed its controversial difficulties as a “high skill ceiling”. Eurogamer was also not discouraged by Silksong's difficulties, assigned to 5/5 and noted that yes, the game is meaningful, of charming so.
The management for best -examined games of the year has changed hand several times. Monster Hunter Wilds, Split Fiction and Blue Prince have all led the way. It is a bit more messier at the top of the pile right now, because even though Clair Obscur and Silksong are tied at 92, have two matches that were launched this year higher points. Shujinkou has a 94, but it is based on only seven reviews, and tears from Kingdom's Switch 2 edition also have a 94, but it is not really a game released in 2025.
