When the Grand Theft Auto 6's release window was finally announced – the first time, at least – confirmed that they intentionally avoid the entire release window for fear of colliding with the probable video playing. No one wanted to compete directly with Rockstar's latest blockbuster, except Devolver, who promised to release a game exactly the same day, because it is a fun bit.
The GTA 6 now has a confirmed release date 2026, which means that the free release schedule has strengthened a lot. October is now a completely jam -filled month, partly because this is before the holiday season, but partly because everyone now knows that GTA 6 will not dominate the news cycle and the players' time.
Hollow Knight: Silksong did not give his competition the same grace to move around the release date. The long -awaited sequel to the critically acclaimed Metroidvania, who for several years has inspired the fans to beg for a release date in the comments from each game exhibition, announced last week that it would finally be launched on September 4. It's two weeks' notice. Of course, some studios with a release date are about the same time now panic.
Games move out from Silksong's road
In the same way that publishers are intentionally avoided by GTA 6, several Indie studios are now also delaying their games to avoid silksong. Two such games that we have reported on Thegamer are Aeterna Lucis, a Metroidvania and Cloverpit, a slot machine Roguelike.
Another indie developer announced that it would delay the demonstration of its Metroidvania stomp and the sword of miracles when it relied on the success of the demo to increase the kickstarts it had planned to launch. Demonschool, a tactic RPG scheduled for a launch on September 3, has now been delayed until November.
Even Bennett Foddy, the developer behind Baby Steps, told after the aftermath that he was thinking about delaying the game. All these developers directly quoted silksong as a contributing factor to their decision.
2025 may not have GTA 6, but it has a silk song
It is fascinating how similar the launches of GTA 6 and Silksong has proven to be, even though they were drastically different games. The former is, of course, the latest part of one of the most famous video games ever, developed by one of the most well -known video game developers of all time, made with a massive budget and a huge team. The latter is an Indie Metroidvania, a sequel to a critically acclaimed yet small project.
Both were almost completely silent about the development as it continued and runs fans to conspiracy -oriented frenzies. And of course, both have run their competition away from their release date.
Is all this Hubbub necessary? Probably not, unless you are in direct competition with any of these games. But it is understandable that indie developers really Do not want to be overlooked during the weeks where the silksong dominates the news cycle, and it is difficult enough here for Indians as it is. It may not be a time suction in the same way that GTA 6 will be, but anything that can interfere with an Indie's marketing cycle is likely to have a major impact on its financial performance, especially considering how important the early mouth can be in a smaller game's success.
We all talked about how GTA 6 would change the 2025 release schedule, but it turns out that Hollow Knight: Silksong was the real gaming exchange, at least in the indie space. Who could have guessed?
