Silent Hill 2 Art Director finally reveals the meaning behind Pyramid Head

Silent Hill 2's legendary art director and the creator of Pyramid Head, Masahiro Ito, has called fans for running his headcanons as the official lore and even shared their thoughts on the importance of the game.

Without a doubt, Silent Hill 2 is one of the most iconic and beloved psychological horror out there, especially now that it has been given a new life that breathes into last year's remake. One of the most interesting things with Silent Hill 2 is how vague its story is and how up for interpretation many of the monsters and moments are.

James looks at a forest in Silent Hill 2 remake.

As fun as it is to theorize why James sees nurses as a monster and why Pyramid Head is even in the first place, these headcanons are just that – Headcanons. Although most of it is in fun, it seems that one of the most important developers behind Silent Hill 2 is more than a little tired of specific stories being pushed when they are not faithful to the source material.

“Their ignorance is still expanding as Big Bang”

Over on Twitter, Silent Hill 2's art director, Masahiro Ito, has handled many fans who share their headcanons and theories about the game. One of the most well -known theories is that James is either a victim or perpetrator for sexual abuse, which has been given a lot of traction since the remake was released.

Ito is not satisfied that this theory becomes so common and has taken to Twitter to share their thoughts. The creator of Pyramid Head said he never wants to “deny the fans his own opinions”, but that Headcanon is pressed on him and others, and that he is even attacked and insulted to defend a story that he helped to create.

In the tweet, Ito points out that Headcanon has no meaning to James' sense of mind, and that no one would like such a character to be the main character in a game. While responding to a tweet, ITO even suggested that the fans claiming that this is part of the story has clearly not played the games.

As I said many times before, I never deny the fans have their own opinions. But they spread their headcanons as “the official” and shoot the headcanons on others or me. If I correct the Headcanon ABT screens (etc) that I did/direct, they insult me or attack me. – Masahiro Ito

While ITO clearly has a tough time with some parts of Silent Hill 2, he at least shared his thoughts on pyramid heads and monsters. Ito notes that Pyramid Head was born of James's desire to meet the truth and punish himself over what happened to Mary and finally put the debate on why the iconic monster shows up.
