Shadowheart MTG card steals Wyll's personal quest, frustrating fans

Being a Wyll Ravengard fan is tough. He has the least amount of content of all the original companions in Baldur's Gate 3, and the conclusion of his story is not treated with as much importance as everyone else's. Hell, Larian hasn't even fixed the issue that caused him to have voice lines from a completely different actor while you're controlling him.

So seeing him miss out on the latest Magic: The Gathering x Baldur's Gate 3 crossover is hardly surprising at this point, especially since only two companions are in the spotlight this time around, Shadowhart and Gale. However, it is quite strange to see that one of them has a card that is heavily Wyll-inspired, with Shadowheart depicted in a scene similar to the wizard's personal mission.

Why is Shadowheart fighting Ansur in this MTG set?

In the Shadowheart set, the Ancient Bronze Dragon card features the fan-favorite cleric going up against Ansur, the final boss of Wyll's quest line. While you don't technically need Wyll around to complete the quest, it's still part of his story, and the fight can only be unlocked if you pay attention to his side quest. So fans were quick to notice when this moment was given to another character, especially when Wyll is already incredibly overlooked.

“There's a companion it would make sense to get Ansur. It's part of his main mission, his literal dad tells you to go there,” said Reddit user Tonedeafmusical. “But no, no Wyll. But I'm sure if he gets a pack, Mizora will be more prominent than him in half the deck.”

“Basted by Larian and even MtG,” agrees GoneRampant1 “Feels like Lae'zel and Wyll will never get this treatment,” says tahubob.

Now it is possible that Lae'zel and Wyll are next in line to get their own sets. I say this because Astarion and Karlach got their own sets in 2024, so there's a chance MTG only takes two companions at a time – it just sucks that Wyll is last again, and his personal mission has already been represented by another character altogether. Wonder how long it will be before we have the whole gang together, anyway?
