Warner Bros. -Games seem to be in crisis. It has bleeding money to the left and right and turned off its studios. The latest round of WB studio closures hit quite hard when the publisher dismantled Monolith Studios, the studio behind franchise as fear, condemned and intermediate duology, among others.
The studio closures and dismissals are enough reason to be frustrated by WB, but the cancellation of Monolith's Untitled Wonder Woman game has some gloomy consequences for one of WB's most interesting ideas: the Nemesis system.
With the Nemesis system patented by WB, it seems critical that one of its remaining studios is in any way implementing what it works with the next or risks the system being lost forever. When you look at what is left of WB's catalog after closing another three studios, it seems clear that Rocksteady is best equipped to give it a shot.
Wb is my nemesis
The Nemesis system was introduced in Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and served as a way for players to feel a greater sense of connection to the world by allowing enemies dynamically to react to their actions. As the player continued through history by defeating ORC captains, a randomly generated captain would continue to continue the player and create a story that is unique to each Playthrough.
The system was incredible and one of the most innovative, memorable mechanics that came out of Xbox One/PS4 of games. Unfortunately, Warner Bros. A patent on the system, which means that only the first party's studios may use it. Since the creation for Shadow of Mordor 2014, the Nemesis system has been presented in 2017's Middle-Earth: Shadow of War and … that's it.
Monolith was rumored to have used the system in some way for his now advanced Wonder Woman game, but other than the Middle-Earth series, the Nemesis system has been left to wither and die in all its glory.
Back with revenge
Now that Monolith has been shut down, there is concern among fans that we may never see the nemesis system ever again. Hopefully, however, one of Warner Bros. 'Other studios will be able to use the mechanic in Monolith's place. I think the clear Frontrunner to pick up the mantle is Rocksteady.
Rocksteady has had tough years with its latest game, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. The game flopped quite hard, both critically and commercially, which caused many fans to worry about what the studio would work with the next, provided it can avoid closing.
With rumors that Rocksteady is coming back to his single-player Batman roots for his next game, it seems like the perfect time to use the Nemesi system. As Vigilante, we have seen lots of examples of Batman making enemies of legions of low -level criminals, so a system that plays on the story that a low villain would like to take revenge on Batman after being abused or embarrassed in front of their boss is very meaningful.
It is easy to imagine what kind of characters can rise through the trail after a few meetings with Batman thanks to how memorable the role of Orker was in Middle-Earth Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War. These types of new villains do not have to be something particularly deep or complicated as many of Batman's main villains are, but they would probably prove to be a welcome addition to the typical Rocksteady Batman formula that some fans start to get tired of.
Batman series are packed to the edge with long-term rivalry between the hero and his biggest villains. We have had decades of movies, games and series that play hits with characters such as The Joker, Two-Face, Bane and Penguin, so it would be nice to add some fresh faces to the mix to counteract the bat for a while.
If Rocksteady does not pick up the Nemesis system, there is still hope that another of WB's first-party studios may try to do something about it. Hopefully, something Is done with it because it feels like the system is on a road cross: either used in an upcoming project or potential face falls in ambiguity forever as one of the gaming industry's biggest fumble.
