Rockstar Games may be working on a potential Switch 2 port Grand Theft Auto 6according to gaming industry leakers on social media. While Rockstar Games has only said so GTA 6 was set to launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in November 2026, rumors claimed Nintendo's latest console was at least under consideration for a future port.
The news of the rumored Switch 2 port came at a tumultuous time for GTA 6 and Rockstar Games. On November 6, Rockstar announced that GTA 6 would miss its May 2026 release window and instead launch on November 19, 2026. The studio said the extra six months would give its developers more time to polish and optimize the game to bring it up to consumer standards. The release date change proved consequential for Rockstar owner Take-Two Interactive, as the company's stock price took a hit just minutes after GTA 6's delay was announced to the public.
220 Rockstar employees sign a joint letter demanding reinstatement of fired staff
The ongoing dispute between Rockstar and its recently fired staff continues to escalate, with remaining employees siding with the former workers.
Rockstar Games is reportedly testing the Switch 2's potential
Also rumors about GTA 6 should be taken with a grain of salt, two industry insiders stated that Rockstar Games may be considering a different platform for its upcoming game. Both NashWeedle and NateTheHate stated on Twitter that Rockstar was testing how GTA 6 could appear on the Switch 2 console, although the studio has not officially confirmed if this was the case. NashWeedle added it GTA 6The release date delay to November 2026 had nothing to do with Rockstar's Switch 2 testing. Should a Switch 2 version of GTA 6 actually make it to store shelves, NashWeedle stated that it wouldn't happen at the same time as the previously announced PS5 and Xbox Series X/S releases.
Compared to the original Switch console, the Switch 2 can render games at up to 4K resolution at 60 frames per second in docked mode. The Switch 2 also supports Nvidia's DLSS upscaling technology, which can render graphically intensive games such as Cyberpunk 2077 run on Switch 2 with a stable resolution and frame rate. It's worth noting that NateTheHate added that testing doesn't always equal a successful port to a new platform, so GTA fans should keep expectations in check.
So far, Rockstar Games' only known Switch 2 contributions are the upcoming current-gen ports Red Dead Redemptionwhich is done with the help of Double Eleven and Cast Iron Games. It remains to be seen GTA 6 or other Rockstar projects will follow.
