Grand Theft Auto 6 developer Rockstar games has once again found itself facing allegations of breaching policies set by the UK government, this time following a federal crackdown on unpaid wages that saw several employees at the Rockstar North studio owed close to £1,400, or roughly $1,800, in back wages. Rockstar Games has previously faced lawsuits and other problems at the hands of UK authorities in response to 2025 employee layoffs, and the company has once again fallen under legal checks and balances for failing to pay staff full earned wages.
On October 30, 2025, Rockstar Games abruptly terminated 31 developers working with Grand Theft Auto 6which sparked major protests and public scrutiny. The company claimed the layoffs were the result of “gross misconduct”, but the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (IWGB) put the move under legal review after some of the removed workers accused Rockstar of union busting. Remaining staff subsequently organized protests outside Rockstar North's offices, although in January 2026 an interim court ruled in favor of Rockstar. As the legal battle continues towards a full hearing, Rockstar Games has once again come under public fire for being included on a list of UK companies that illegally underpaid workers.
Take-Two CEO Makes Bold Claims About Grand Theft Auto 6
With the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 now just eight months away, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick is making a bold claim about the highly anticipated title.
Rockstar North failed to fully pay employees by 2025
According to official data compiled by the HM Revenue and Customs government department in the UK, Rockstar Games UK Limited, the arm of Rockstar Games that oversees Rockstar North, failed to pay £1,396.73 to five workers in 2025. Rockstar Games UK Limited was listed among 389 separate organizations operating in the UK that are now liable to pay any wages. Despite the total amount of unpaid wages at Rockstar North falling within typical pay gaps discovered by HM Revenue and Customs in its annual reports, the studio's already troubled status has received more scrutiny than usual. In addition to the legal issues, a fire broke out at Rockstar North on January 19, 2026, although no employees were injured, and the company insisted that the incident would have no impact on the team's ability to continue development on Grand Theft Auto 6.

Rockstar North and parent company Rockstar Games are far from the only video game studios to be embroiled in legal battles in recent years or to face public criticism for rounds of layoffs and canceled projects. Big companies like Microsoft, Embracer Group and Sony are among dozens of AAA names, plus just as many indie groups, to lay off employees with little or no notice. The video game industry, in particular, has been in turbulent waters since the summer of 2023, and many question whether these issues will begin to settle anytime soon. As long as Rockstar North pays out the unpaid wages for 2025, that issue will be fully resolved, but the company is still waiting to see how Rockstar's legal battle with its laid-off employees will play out.
In the midst of these complications, the goal is to ensure Grand Theft Auto 6 is released on time, especially after the title has already been delayed on several occasions. Even with many who worked on the project now laid off and others looking to support their terminated team members, Rockstar Games has made it clear that they are doing everything they can to reach the previously announced Grant Theft Auto 6 release date in November 2026. Only time will tell if UK legal hurdles or other unexpected complications will affect Grand Theft Auto 6 or other projects underway at Rockstar North and others Rockstar games office, so interested fans may want to stay tuned for any official updates on the future of GTA 6 and Rockstar.
