PlayStation 5 players have jumped at the chance to pre-order Bethesda's space RPG Starfield after its announcement for the platform. Starfield is already near the top of the PlayStation Store pre-order charts, as the Xbox console exclusive finally makes its way to PlayStation 5 for the first time.
Bethesda recently confirmed that Starfield coming to PS5 on April 7, 2026, along with the Free Lanes update and Terran Armada expansion. The game first launched on PC and Xbox Series X/S in September 2023, so it has taken two and a half years for it to come to Sony's console. After Microsoft's purchase of Bethesda, keep Starfield as an exclusive Xbox console was a big statement from the company, although it was always expected to come to the PlayStation 5 at some point.
Starfield is nearing the top of the PS5 pre-order charts
Although the PS5 release was first announced a few days ago, Starfield's Premium Edition is already in third place on the PlayStation Store pre-order charts, behind Crimson Desert and its Deluxe Edition in the US. The base version of Starfield is six, after 007 First light and LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knights Deluxe Edition. Despite that Starfield wasn't exactly Bethesda's best-received game (currently has “Mixed” Steam reviews), PlayStation players are still clearly excited to finally get their hands on the sci-fi RPG after a two-and-a-half-year delay. Exact sales numbers aren't public, but it's fair to assume the game is performing well ahead of its PS5 release on April 7th based on these early pre-order charts.
That is interesting Starfields Premium Edition outsells the base game on PlayStation 5. The Premium Edition comes with both expansions: fragmented space and the coming Terran Armada. It's still quite expensive at $69.99, but PS5 players will want to give the whole experience a chance to impress, rather than playing the version of the game that doesn't include all the content Bethesda has released so far.
Starfields arrival on PlayStation 5 has always felt like a guarantee, even if Bethesda was silent about the possibility for a long time. Todd Howard recently revealed that Bethesda always wanted Starfield on PS5, describing it as a “matter of time”. Even with Microsoft's purchase of Bethesda, it's somewhat surprising that the wait for the PS5 version has lasted as long as two and a half years.
Although the majority of developers at Bethesda are now developing The Elder Scrolls 6it seems the studio still has some plans for Starfield yet. A recent rumor suggests so Starfield may also come to Nintendo Switch 2, although this has not been confirmed. While rumors should always be taken with a grain of salt, it's important to note that Bethesda recently released Fallout 4 on Switch 2, with Oblivion remastered coming later this year. This indicates the growing importance of Nintendo's latest console to Bethesda, making a Starfield port a distinct opportunity.
