We were first introduced to the concept of Mega Evolutions back in Pokemon X and Y, but Pokemon Legends: ZA brings it back in its fullest form yet with dozens of new Mega Evolution forms of your favorite Pokemon to make them even harder to handle in battle.
But not all Pokemon Mega Evolutions were designed the same, and for every Pokemon that ends up looking cooler and more impressive in its Mega form, there are many that are a little goofier when you see them on the battlefield. Sure they are powerful, but at what cost?
Mega Flotte
|
Type |
Fairy |
|---|---|
|
How to get |
Develop Flabebe |
|
Mega Stone Location |
Defeat your “rival” in Infinite ZA Royale |
Although not one of the boxart legendaries, Floette and Flabebe have become somewhat of an icon Pokemon for the games set in Kalos, Pokemon Legends: ZA definitely included. Although you'll see AZ's Floette most often, that doesn't mean you can't go into the various gardens around town and catch one of your very own.
Pokemon Legends: ZA appears to have 26 new mega evolutions, with DLC adding at least 16 more
The number of Mega Evolutions almost doubles.
After defeating either Urbain or Taunie (whose presence is determined by whether you're playing with a male or female bodied trainer), you'll get Floettite which allows whichever of the many colors of Floette you've got to Mega Evolve, but you'll lose a lot of the regular beauty of the Mega form. Its eternal flower grows to be colossal, and it detracts from the cute little Pokemon itself.
Mega Gyarados
|
Type |
Water/flight |
|---|---|
|
How to get |
Evolve Magikarp or Catch a Gyarados |
|
Mega Stone Location |
Quasartico Inc. |
Gyarados has long been one of the most ferocious Water-type Pokemon in any game where it appears, and you'll find an equally potent power distribution in Pokemon Legends: ZA, whether you manage to train a Magikarp when you get to Lumiose or just grab a Gyarados later in the main game.
And while we love the stat changes Mega Gyarados gets for its transformative efforts, it looks a little less intimidating than it did before, somehow. The colossal fin on its back is menacing, sure, but this fearsome snake seems to shrink a bit in length in its Mega form, giving off more of an angry shrimp vibe than anything else.
Mega Heracross
|
Type |
Bug/Fighting |
|---|---|
|
How to get |
Trade a Pikachu to Tracie or Catch a Heracross |
|
Mega Stone Location |
Quasartico Inc. |
While the typo definitely got something of a makeover with Pokemon Legends: ZA, making them potentially more viable competitively than they've ever been before, Heracross has always been a good choice for this intrepid bug hunter. In this game, however, it's a real powerhouse, proving necessary for many speedruns.
Mega Heracross gets some powerful stat changes with its Mega form, but damn if it doesn't get a little goofier in the process. Its cheeks look swollen, its arms and legs are all very oddly shaped and don't even get us started on that horn. Luckily the horn does good damage or we'd be laughing all the way to our boxes to hide this bug buddy.
Mega Slow Bridge
|
Type |
Water/Psychic |
|---|---|
|
How to get |
Capture Slowbro |
|
Mega Stone Location |
Defeat Rogue Mega Slowbro |
We've seen Slowbro take on plenty of pretty unique forms over the years, and all of them have been remarkably silly (canonically), but there was perhaps none sillier than the Mega Slowbro form we were introduced to back in Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.
Pokemon Legends: ZA – Complete Mega Evolution Guide
Legends takes a different approach to Mega Evolution.
The bizarre gray Shelldern that has been clamped onto Slowbro's tail makes remarkably unsettling progress as you reach Slowbro's Mega form, chewing its way up the Hermit Crab Pokémon's entire torso and acting as some sort of weird, living body suit.
If you happen to catch Slowpoke and evolve it, you will get the Galarian form of Slowbro instead of the Cantonese, and the Galarian form of Slowbro cannot Mega Evolve.
Mega Clefable
|
Type |
Fairy/Flying |
|---|---|
|
How to get |
Capture Clefable or Develop Cleffa |
|
Mega Stone Location |
Quasartico Inc. |
While the regular form of Clefable has relied entirely on its Fairy typing since its introduction in Generation Six, having been a normal Pokémon prior to this addition, you'll find no shortage of pretty battle-worthy Fairy moves on the iconic, titular Fairy Pokémon.
After unlocking access to the Clefablite when you beat Jacinthe and reach Rank B in ZA Royale, you'll be able to purchase the ability to make your hard-earned Clefable go Mega, but prepare for something of a silly sight. Its wings grow into actual butterfly wings, it gets a little beret-like hat, and we're not really fans of the vacant look in Mega Clefable's eyes either.
Mega Greninja
|
Type |
Water/Dark |
|---|---|
|
How to get |
Develop Froakie |
|
Mega Stone Location |
Some rankings in ranked battle seasons |
Pokemon fans have absolutely loved Greninja since its debut in the original jaunt that took us to Kalos back in the Generation Six games, and we've all been eager to see this fan-favorite frog return once again in Pokemon Legends: ZA. While its Mega Evolution requires a bit of doing, with the ranked battles as your method of obtaining it, you'll be in for a silly surprise when you first Mega Evolve your Greninja.
This was one of the first Megas we got to see for Pokemon Legends: ZA, and fans have long laughed at the reverse pose Mega Greninja assumes. Its Water Shuriken acts as something of a sticky ceiling for Greninja to hang onto, so just try not to laugh when the camera pans to your bizarrely upset Ninja Pokemon.
Mega Feraligatr
Reaction to the starters selected for Pokemon Legends: ZA was mixed at best, with the original Kalos starters being shelved in favor of a mix of some starters from other regions of the Pokemon universe, but if you're a Water trainer and have been doing your typing in the early game, you and your Feraligatr have undoubtedly been in for quite a ride.

Pokemon Legends: ZA Brings Back Mega Evolution, But Which Pokemon Could Get The Treatment?
And while we can definitely appreciate the big step up in power (who wouldn't want an extra type with a Mega Form?), we're not too sold on Mega Feraligatr's design. The huge crocodile skull mask is probably meant to be scary, but it's a bit silly and mostly just gets in the way when looking around town.
Mega Dragon Algae
|
Type |
Poison/Dragon |
|---|---|
|
How to get |
Develop Screlp or Catch Dragalgae |
|
Mega Stone Location |
Quasartico Inc. |
While we ranked Dragalgae as our pick for the best Pokemon type to bring to your team in the base game for Pokemon Legends: ZA, we'd be lying if we said its Mega Evolution form didn't make us laugh a little the very first time we saw it.
The wings on the head are brilliant and plump, dazzling in a perfect purple to match the main body, but what the hell is with the weird eyeball horns it gets? Its actual eyes remain on its face, so maybe it's meant to be a distraction for other Pokemon in the wild to keep Dragaelgae safe, but it makes us laugh every time it looks our way.
Mega Victreebel
|
Type |
Grass/Poison |
|---|---|
|
How to get |
Evolve Bellsprout |
|
Mega Stone Location |
Defeat Rogue Mega Victreebel |
If you've ever watched the original Pokémon anime back when Ash and friends were out roaming the Kalos region trying to catch them all, you probably remember the iconic, ear-piercing screech that Victreebel lets out when you first send it out into the field. Well, that's the sound we also made when we first saw Mega Victreebel.
Mega Victreebel was an early debut for the Pokemon Company when they started teasing information about Pokemon Legends: ZA bringing the Mega Evolution mechanic back into the series, but fans have laughed since its debut, accusing Pokemon of catering to past gen one fans with its inclusion.
Mega Starmie
Starmie is another Pokemon that we never really paid much attention to at all, until Pokemon Legends: ZA got the potentially most ridiculous Mega Evolution form of all. Despite DLC being rolled out since the game's release to include dozens more interesting Mega Pokémon, fans have stuck with Starmie.
Not only is the body in its Mega Evolution form pretty silly as it is, but watching Mega Starmie walk around as it follows you through Lumiose City is a terrifying mix of hilarious and terrifying. Why did they make its legs do that…?
