Pokemon Winds and Waves' best box art Legendary types are already clear

Pokémon Gen 10 is imminent, with confirmation that Pokemon winds and waves coming in 2027. Fans have already seen some of the Pokemon winds and waves' open world structure, but more importantly, they've already seen the starters: Browt the Grass Chicken, Pombon the Fire Dog and Gecqua the Water Gecko. Game Freak and The Pokemon Company still have several new Pokemon to reveal, but what's coming next is clear: box art's legendary Pokemon.

The last few generations have all followed a similar reveal structure: titles, world and newbies in the first trailer, boxart legends in the second. This applied to pokemon sword and shield, which revealed its titles, world and starters on Pokemon Day 2019, with Zacian and Zamazenta following in the second trailer. This also applied Pokemon Scarlet and Violetwhich revealed its title, world, and launch on Pokemon Day 2022, with Koraidon and Miraidon following in the second trailer. It's worth noting that both other trailers were released the following June, and the timing may change this time around Pokemon winds and waves released later than other mainline games. However, this does not mean that the strategy changes.

Pokemon Wind and Wave Gen 10 leak reveals full region, gyms and more

Pokemon Gen 10 has already been a leaky ship, but the latest is giving fans an in-depth look at what the region has to offer.

Most likely the other Pokemon winds and waves the trailer will showcase the new box art legendaries. When is the biggest question right now, but “what” already feels answered. And because of Pokemon winds and wavesmassive leaks, fans already know a broad description of these Pokemon. Riddler Khu, who has a proven track record, has described them as “Grandpa Wind and Grandma Wave”, which hints at several important details for these Pokémon.

There is probably some connection between Wavychu and Windychu and their respective legendaries.

Pokemon Winds and Waves' distinctive legendary type

When it comes to legendary box art types, there is usually a certain symmetry or connection. They can be opposing forces, like Groudon and Kyogre, or two sides of the same coin: Koraidon and Miraidon, which are Fighting/Dragon and Electric/Dragon, respectively. It is uncertain if the legendary will have two types, be monotypic or monotypic with a special form (a la Zacian and Zamazenta), but currently the former seems likely.

It is practically certain Pokemon winds' box art legendary will have the Flying type and Pokemon Waves' box art legendary will have the Water type. It is pointless, as an example, because Pokemon winds to be ground type and Pokemon waves being Fire type as opposed to Flying/Water.

How grandfather/grandmother fits in thematically

Grandpa and Grandma are more thematic than literal, though it wouldn't be surprising to see these Pokémon appear or feel “aged.” A grandfather implies a certain level of masculinity, with typical associations of the term being wisdom, ancient power and/or spiritual guardian of nature. Grandmother likewise suggests a certain level of femininity, with similar associations with the addition of nurturing or life-giving. They will likely determine each legend's secondary spell, if it has one.

In the case of Pokemon windsthis could suggest a Flying/Dragon type to represent an ancient celestial elder that is powerful and primal, a Flying/Psychic type that is wise, sage-like and/or humanoid or Kami-inspired, or perhaps Flying/Fairy if it leaned into it as a benevolent wind spirit.

  • Flying/Psychic

  • Flying/fairy

Everything in Pokemon Gen 10 Teraleak Explained

Images and documents related to Pokemon Gen 10 games, allegedly called Pokemon Wind and Wave, have surfaced online detailing their new content.

In the case of Pokemon wavesthis could imply water/river as a nourishing, life-giving force; Water/dragon to represent an ancient ocean, powerful ocean entity; or Water/Ghost leaning into tides as memories with ancestral themes.

  • Water/ghost

Pokemon Winds and Waves typings need a strong connection

The safe way

When it comes to the symmetrical approach, Flying/Dragon and Water/Dragon make the most sense. They both could represent the power of the winds and waves in this way. And it cannot be ruled out. Dragons are often used in legendary types, and while Pokemon Scarlet and Violet both contained dragon-type legendaries, Pokémon Gen 4 and Gen 5 both did it too. It's the safest, least interesting way.

  • Flying/Dragon and Water/Dragon

The strongest theme (with different types)

Sometimes a legendary is simply stronger than the opponent, and it's hard to say how the exact approach is determined. But the combo Flying/Dragon and Water/Fairy is perhaps the most interesting. Flying/Dragon is a nice, clean typing that could represent an ancient masculine force like a Sky Elder, while Water/Fairy creates this beautiful ocean matriarch theme. The contrast between the sea and the sky remains clean, and it would be an interesting combination based on theme more than just balance and dragon typing.

  • Flying/dragon and water/fairy

In this case Water/Fairy would have the type advantage as Fairy could easily dominate the Dragon typing. That said, there would be a real chance that Flying/Dragon would have electric type moves. It wouldn't get STAB, but it would help level the playing field anyway.

The secret third thing may be the most interesting

pokeon winds and waves splash art

If Pokemon winds and waves lean into its ancestral, create-a-better-world-for-your-children themes, then the third option could see Game Freak lean more heavily on the “elder spirits” of the sky and sea. It would be interesting to see, competitively and lore-wise, how Flying/Psychic and Water/Ghost turn out. Both could easily represent “Wind Grandfather” and “Brave Grandmother”, with the former taking on more of a Wind Sage-like design and the latter representing the ancestral, nurturing sea.

  • Flying/Psychic and Water/Ghost

Moreover, the logic is still competitive. Water/Ghost would have the advantage, as Ghost knocks out Psychic, but Flying/Psychic could still learn something like Thunder to level the playing field. And that would be a very interesting design decision, depending on how Pokémon Gen 10 is approaching lore.

In complete tinfoil hat territory, the splash art for Pokemon Waves sees a hint of purple involved, which could easily be associated with Ghost-type Pokemon. The latest version of Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen also kept the odd Gen 1 dynamic of the Ghost/Psychic type, which this could hearken back to.

Flying and water-like legendaries are locked

While the secondary writing, if there is one, isn't completely locked in, the titles almost officially confirm air and water type legendaries. The interplay should be interesting to watch, but for now fans will just have to wait and see. Trailer 2 is at least months out, but it will likely confirm the legendary Pokemon's design.
