Pokemon leaks have ex-Nintendo marketing saying it needs to “expand” its security

Nintendo and Game Freak have run quite the leaky ship over the past few years, though the latest batch of Pokemon leaks is arguably the most disastrous of them all. Not only has the name of the next generation reportedly been leaked – Pokemon Wind & Waves – but other important details such as the release schedule of the series and new projects have been shared on social media.

Nintendo or Game Freak clearly have huge security issues at the moment, which is very surprising when Nintendo is notorious for cracking down on anyone it feels has done them wrong. It literally has a team of ninjas responsible for hunting down people who leak secret information, though they'll clearly have to go back to their dojos for more training if the latest leaks are the result of their efforts.

Whenever something big happens regarding Nintendo, it's always worth checking out what ex-Nintendo marketing leads Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang have to say about the situation. Having been on the inside for a while, they usually have an interesting insight into what Nintendo might be thinking in times of crisis. But this time, the duo are much more critical of how Nintendo seems to be dealing with its leak problem.

In Kit & Krysta's latest episode (thanks GamesRadar), the duo talk about the latest Pokemon leaks and what Nintendo can do to try and stop more from happening in the future. Ellis begins by explaining that these leaks are most likely extremely “damaging” to Nintendo and that he feels a little sorry for them, but also that the company needs to “really look in the mirror” and realize that they're not good at keeping things secret.

“Just based on our own experiences dealing with leaks at Nintendo, I feel like when something happens, they're ramping up the same potential leaks,” Ellis said. “And they just keep tightening and tightening in the same places. But there are other places that are leakage vectors that may not be addressed, may not be tightened and may grow.”

Ellis goes on to say that Nintendo needs to “broaden the scope of how they think about this,” saying that the leaks probably aren't coming from places Nintendo expects them to. Yang also adds to the conversation by revealing some of the anti-leakage measures taken during her time at the company, such as restricting communication with personal and work devices, although Yang says these were “perceived false security measures” that didn't really help.
