Pokemon: 7 Strongest Johto Trainers

After exploring the Kanto region and the Orange Islands, Pokémon anime created a new era. Johto was the first new region that Ash and his friends explored, filled with all sorts of new sights and battles to be had. Most importantly, Johto was home to Pokémon he had never seen before!

Like any other region, Ash would also encounter several trainers in Johto that would prove challenging to fight. Many of these trainers happened to be gym leaders, like Morty and Whitney. Others were not as relevant to Ash's story, but experienced their own challenges in the meantime.

Jasmine is working hard to become a good gym leader

The steel-type trainer becomes surprisingly tough during battle

Before the player can fight Jasmine, the Steel-type Gym Leader of Olivine City Gym, they must run an errand for her. When the Ampharos of the Olivine Lighthouse, Amphy, has fallen ill, Jasmine asks the player to bring back some medicine from the Cianwood City Pharmacy. When Amphy gets better, Jasmine will return to the gym with her team of Steel-type Pokémon. In the anime, Jasmine retains her soft and gentle personality from the games, but is also shown to be quite aggressive during battles.

In his Gym battle against Jasmine, Ash found the match challenging, as Jasmine's Magnemite wore out Pikachu, who was later defeated by Steelix. The Iron Snake Pokémon is well known for its strong defense as well as its offensive power, which it used to destroy Team Rocket's Wobbuffet-shaped mecha. After Ash's time in Johto, Jasmine later returned during her adventures in Sinnoh. As she travels, Jasmine learns more about fighting from competitions and begins to focus on creating better battle strategies.

Morty searches for legendary Pokemon with his friend Eusine

Morty is particularly fascinated by the legends of Ho-Oh

Many people in the Johto region are interested in studying the history of the region, where Gym Leader Morty is just one individual. As his family has lived in the Johto region, specifically Ecruteak City, for hundreds of years, Morty is very loyal to his home and the stories surrounding it. The most famous story of Ecruteak City lies with the burnt tower, once known as the Bell Tower. Years ago, a terrible fire burned down the building and resulted in the death of three unnamed Pokémon. But when the rain put out the fire, Ho-Oh appeared and revived the three Pokemon into the three legendary beasts.

Although not as obsessed with searching for legendary Pokemon as his friend Eusine, Morty likes to research what he can about Ho-Oh and the legendary beasts. In fact, when the Tin Tower's crystal clocks were stolen by Team Rocket, he was there with Eusine to watch as Suicune sent the troublesome group away. As for his fighting skills, Morty is a cunning master of Ghost-type Pokémon, and rarely seen without his Gengar. He can also communicate with this type and is on good terms with the wild ghost types that live in the burnt tower.

Pryce was once a famous trainer in the past

The ice-type trainer became bitter after losing his partner Pokémon

Pokemon Pryce-1

Although his anime counterpart is not as prominent as his Pokemon adventure counterpart, Pryce has an interesting history. As a young trainer, Pryce made a name for himself as a powerful fighter thanks to his partner Pokémon, Piloswine. The two were like family, and when the Ice/Ground type suddenly left Pryce after a painful encounter with a Magmar, Pryce became cold and distant towards everyone, even his Pokémon. Decades later, he was known as a bitter trainer who, while good at focusing on a Pokémon's powers, had no emotional connection to them.

In fact, Pryce initially didn't want to fight Ash because he noticed how the young trainer focused on his friendships with Pokémon. However, when the heroes found Pryce's Piloswine after it had been frozen for decades, it was revealed that the Swine Pokémon only existed to find healing herbs for its trainer, but was soon unable to move. Overjoyed to see his old friend again, Pryce immediately added him to his current roster and agreed to fight Ash. Piloswine proved to be a very tough opponent for Ash's team, but when Pryce saw how tired Piloswine was, he lost the match, giving Ash the victory.

Whitney has a famous reputation thanks to her Pokemon

Miltank's Rollout Move has plagued both the players and Ash Ketchum

The Normal type, although often overlooked by trainers, is actually a very powerful and versatile type. Not only can normal-type Pokémon learn different types of moves, but many moves of their own type, such as Giga Impact and Hyper Beam, are widely known for their power. One Normal type that tends to be forgotten is Miltank, the female counterpart to Tauros. This adorable cow Pokémon is known for her gentle nature, but she's also a force to be reckoned with in battle.

Whitney, the gym leader of the Goldenrod City Gym, is known for her energetic personality and love of all things cute. Her awesome Pokemon is Miltank, a species that her uncle Milton works with on his farm. Like her in-game counterpart, Whitney's Miltank is known for her Rollout attack, which deals massive damage. Even Ash had trouble with his match, losing the first and winning the second.

Marina, the animated equivalent of Kris from Pokémon Crystalhas a different goal in mind than just becoming a coach. While she is good at fighting, Marina dreams of becoming a Pokemon Idol. Thus, she works as both a trainer and Pokémon coordinator, hoping to use cute and cool Pokémon to help her rise to fame. In later seasons, Marina appears in magazines displaying Trainer stuff, implying that she is on her way to becoming a popular Pokémon Idol.

Like her friends Jimmy and Vincent, Marina was given her starter Pokémon by Professor Elm; in Marina's case, her partner Pokémon is a Feraligatr named Wani-Wani. She has a leading role in the special The Legend of Thunder!where Team Rocket agents Attila and Hun attempt to capture the legendary electric-type Pokemon Raikou. Along with Jimmy, the two managed to fend off the Team Rocket agents by using her Misdreavus “Little Miss” in battle. She was also the one who freed Raikou from the hold where it was kept, and used Little Miss again when Attila and Hun returned.

Jimmy is the earliest known animated counterpart to Ethan from the Generation II games, as well Pokémon HeartGold and Pokemon SoulSilver. Like Ash, he has an enthusiastic personality, which makes him quite impulsive. But he's also good with Pokémon, and best friends with his partner Pokémon, Typhlosion, the same way Ash is best friends with his Pikachu. Jimmy's goal is to become a powerful Pokémon trainer, so tough that he will be able to protect his home in New Bark Town and everyone who lives there. He really became a great trainer over time, and entered the Silver Conference later along with Marina.

IN The Legend of Thunder!Jimmy's Pokémon are defeated by Attila and Hun's own Pokémon, though they are thankfully knocked out by Marina's little miss. While Raikou was recuperating at the Pokémon Center, Jimmy learned more about the legendary Pokémon from Eusine, which made him even more interesting. While Jimmy's recklessness can lead him into danger, his quick thinking and focus on offensive battles have made him and his Pokémon tough contenders. In fact, Jimmy's heroics later earned him the respect of Raikou when it was finally safe.

Clair is a renowned dragon type specialist

The gym leader is also Lance's cousin

The last gym leader in the Johto region, Clair, lives in Blackthorn City, where the Dragon's Den is located. For generations, many dragon-type specialists have lived in Blackthorn City and trained their Pokémon in the depths of the Dragon's Den, where rare Pokémon can be found. One such Dragon-type specialist is Clair, who is shown to have an extraordinary bond not only with her Dragon-type Pokémon, but the entire type. In addition to her expertise as a gym leader, she is also Iris' mentor in the anime.

Like her cousin, Lance, Clair's career as a coach has earned her the respect and awe of many individuals. As Ash has ventured into the Unova region, her team has grown into an absolutely amazing roster. In addition to her familiar Dragonair and Kingdra, Clair also has the water/flying type Gyarados, which serves as her team's secret weapon. She also tamed a wild Dragonite angered by Team Rocket and even befriended a wild Shiny Druddigon from the Unova region, adding both to her team.
