PlayStation is reportedly working on smaller “Deep, Deep-Cut” games

Summary

  • PlayStation has for a long time now been criticized for not using most of its beloved older franchises.

  • That may not be the case in the future, as a reliable reporter has claimed that smaller games are on the way.

  • These titles will be from “deep-cut” IP, leaving a lot of speculation as to what PlayStation is up to.

A reliable reporter has claimed that PlayStation is reportedly working on several smaller games from “deep, deep-cut” franchises to complement some of its larger releases.

Just a few months ago, Astro Bot managed to remind us all just how good PlayStation's first-party lineup is, a feat so strong that it even won Game of the Year at both The Game Awards and TheGamer. That said, a fair criticism of Astro Bot is how it parades around a bunch of series that Sony and PlayStation have largely ignored for the past decade.

I may never 100 percent Astro Bot now.

While it all seemed a bit cruel and ironic when Astro Bot launched, it seems that PlayStation is taking steps to remedy that criticism and give longtime fans a little more to look forward to outside of their massive triple-A releases. The company's CEO Herman Hulst recently confirmed this and it seems that there are already some smaller projects in the works.

PlayStation develops some smaller games in “Deep-Cut” Franchises

As highlighted by ResetEra user –R, the latest episode of VGC: The Video Game Podcast saw its hosts talk about the future of PlayStation 2025. After admitting that they want to see more games from PlayStation this year, VGC's editor in – Chief Andy Robinson shared an interesting clue that suggests that is indeed the intention of the company.

Robinson said that, “without being an insider d**k”, he knows of a couple of the games currently in development and that they contain some “deep, deep cut old IP”. The titles in development are meant to be smaller titles that will complement PlayStation's larger releases, such as Ghost of Yotei and Death Stranding 2.

Without being an insider, I know of a couple they're working on, like the deep, deep old IP address. Kind of in the form you're talking about, maybe some smaller games to complement their big releases. – Andy Robinson

Since the statement is intentionally vague, it's not clear which IP addresses PlayStation is specifically working on developing smaller titles for, but it's easy to guess. Thanks to Astro Bot, we have a whole bunch of minor series contenders that could get a new game, like Ape Escape, Patapon, Parappa the Rapper, Vib-Ribbon, and tons more.

We'll have to wait and see which franchises PlayStation will actually use, but the mention of “deep, deep-cut” series seems to eliminate some of the more beloved ones like Sly Cooper and Jak and Daxter. Here's hoping all the games lead to a path where we finally get Sly out of Egypt.
