PlayStation games that deserve remakes

Important takeaways

  • God of War's original adventure could be reintroduced with new technology and storytelling.
  • The Infamous franchise could find success on modern Sony hardware given its past commercial and critical success.
  • The Parasite Eve series, despite fan adoration and critically acclaimed ratings, has seemingly been forgotten by Sony.

With a thirty-year history in the video game industry, PlayStation the hardware has had a long time to amass not only a long line of dedicated fans but a library of truly exceptional experiences. But even the most revered and in-demand Sony franchises cannot guarantee that they will be reintroduced to a contemporary audience through a slew of remakes or reboots.

Featuring cameo appearances from many of Sony's most long-lost and much-loved series in Astro Bot reviving fan fervor for Sony's back catalog, there are many franchises that fans would undoubtedly love to see on modern PlayStation hardware. From seventh generation action platformers to PlayStation 1 launch titles, Sony's library is full of unique gaming experiences just waiting to be seen again.

6 God of war

A series of contemporary fame that ignores previous titles

With 2018's overwhelming success God of war back to the series, Sony has seemingly relegated Kratos' original adventures to mere backstories.

The 2005 hack-and-slash debut of Ghost of Sparta was an overwhelming success for the PlayStation 2 and spawned several sequels and spinoff titles. Playable across multiple generations of PlayStation consoles and handhelds, pre-reboot versions of Kratos can easily be reimagined or revived with Sony Santa Monica's clear prowess with PS5 technology. Pitched as a reboot of Kratos' origin, or a polished remaster of the original, Sony has a lot of room to work with.

5 Notorious

After explosive success on PS3 and PS4, the series has been put to rest

From Cole MacGrath's electrifying powers to Derlsin Rowe's energy-stealing traits, the protagonists of Sucker Punch's third-person action titles have seen limited peaks on Sony's gaming hardware.

Family

7 Best FPS Remakes and Reboots

Remakes and reboots may be missed, but these FPS titles managed to improve and stay true to their original games.

Debuted on PlayStation 3 in 2009, Notorious' commercial and critical success spawned several sequels, culminating in the 2014s Notorious: Second Son on PlayStation 4. With Metacritic scores in the 80s across the series' main releases, and developers at Sucker Punch focused on their Ghost of Tsushima the sequel, Sony's gritty superhero semi-open world series could find great success on modern Sony hardware.

4 Resistance

The status of Sony's 'Halo-Killer' franchise is in question

After finding initial commercial and user success as the launch title for Sony's seventh-generation console, the PlayStation 3's first-person shooter series' unique setting seems wasted as it sits on the back burner.

In addition to the 2006 release, Resistance series of alternate history science-fiction first- and third-person shooters has seen several sequels and spin-off titles. Never make the leap to PlayStation 4, with its latest title from 2012 Resistance: Burning Sky on the PlayStation Vita, the series has disappeared on older Sony hardware. But with the status of a new one Kill zone title up in the air, and a proposed series reboot already shot down by Sony, series fans can only hope for something new Resistance news.

3 Wipeout

Although not forgotten, Sony's Sci-Fi Racer treads water

Having previously gained fans from the series' original title playable on both Sony and Sega hardware, Psygnosis launches PlayStation 1 title Wipeout has struggled to be ushered into the 21st century with equal fanfare.

The science fiction racing series, which is undoubtedly similar to Nintendo's own sick F-zero franchise, has been taken out through smaller mobile and virtual reality projects. Despite being a Sony first-party franchise, Wipeout has seemingly struggled to get much attention from its parent company. But with the 2017 release of Wipeout Omega Collection bringing the series to PlayStation 4 and 2021 Wipeout Merge transfer the series to mobile devices once again, the series is not completely forgotten.

2 Ico

A PS2 classic waiting for a remake by Bluepoint games

Ico And Yorda run across a sandy expanse in ICO.

Despite the enduring success of Team Ico's first title of the same name, and a critically well-received remake of their later title Shadow of the Colossusthis PlayStation 2 darling has yet to receive the same treatment.

The slower-paced narrative platformer is loved – as evidenced by its enduring success culminating in fandom and a licensed novel – but Sony doesn't seem to have any plans to remake the classic title. While Bluepoint Studios has put their skillful remake skills into creating the awesome Demon souls and Shadow of the Colossus reboot, Ico remains unplayable on modern PlayStation hardware.

1 Parasite Eve

A beloved square series with cult classic status and an avid fan base

With prolonged critical and fan worship, Parasite Eves legacy as Square Enix's first mature-rated series has endured – despite few contemporary efforts to keep the series in the industry's consciousness.

The horror RPG series' success extended to the franchise's two console installments on the original PlayStation, and a spin-off third title on the PlayStation Portable in 2010. However, despite its long-lasting cultural impact with a manga series inspired by its events and the 2011 introduction of the games to the PlayStation Network, the franchise has seemingly long dormant for Sony.
