Overwatch Reveals Nier: Automata Collab Skins

Monitoring has revealed a collaboration with Nier: Automatawith skins for Vendetta, Kiriko, Lifeweaver, Mercy and Wuyang that transform them into androids and machine lifeforms from the hit role-playing game. After accidentally leaking these shells a few days early, Monitoring has officially confirmed that this crossover is coming soon.

On February 10, Monitoring literally changed the game by removing the 2 from its title in what has become a dramatically successful brand. Five new heroes, ambitious year-long seasonal stories and sub-roles are just some of the ways Blizzard has reinvented Monitoring this year. Additionally, it launched its first collaboration of the year with Hello Kitty and Friends, featuring charming Sanrio character skins for Juno, Mercy, Kiriko, D.Va, Widowmaker and Lucio.

This crossover event shouldn't come as a complete surprise to most gamers. On February 27, Monitoring accidentally shared a YouTube Short that teased Nier: Automata cooperate for about an hour before removing it. The leak included the March 10 launch date and key art teasing these hero skins, but still, seeing the official announcement is no less exciting.

Nier: Automata is a 2017 action RPG set in the post-apocalyptic world of Nierwhich itself is technically a roundabout offshoot of Dragon Guard series. Known for its existential themes, haunting visuals and haunting soundtrack, Nier: Automata Quickly catapulted the franchise from a cult classic to an award-winning hit. In fact, Square Enix even confirmed that the RPG had officially passed 10 million copies sold on the day this collaboration was initially leaked, and recently teased a direct sequel to Nier: Automata also.

Nier: Automata are also notorious for cooperating with almost every game out there. Game director Yoko Taro has previously said that he is a “slave under capitalism” who will “do anything for money.” Monitoring joins the list of over 40 Nier: Automata co-op alongside games like Call of Duty: Mobile, Final Fantasy 14, Rainbow Six Siege, Stellar Bladeand Astro Bot.

Overwatch collaborations and the problem of hero favoritism

Exciting like this Nier: Automata crossover is, it highlights a major problem with Monitoring leather. Some heroes, especially Kiriko, Mercy and now Wuyang, have received an unfair amount of attention compared to others. Kiriko and Mercy, in particular, were just in the Hello Kitty and Friends collaboration weeks earlier, and this is Wuyang's third crossover appearance since his July 2025 debut—even not counting his China-only Monitoring x Naraka Bladepoint skin. This problem is even more serious in Nier: Automata cooperation, as four of the selected heroes are supports, with only one damage and zero tank characters.

Although that makes sense Monitoring would make these high-ticket crossover shop skins for popular heroes, it seems unfair to other less popular characters. Fan favorites like Ana, Baptiste and even originals Monitoring heroes like Zarya still haven't gotten any external IP collaborations in the three years since Blizzard started making them seriously. Hopefully future crossovers can bring some love to these underrated heroes.
