Anime fans are passionate about what they love. While it usually manifests itself in a positive way, there are times when fans go too far. Season 3 of One Punch Man has been a rollercoaster so far. While there are parts of the new season that fans like, most have been very critical of it.
When the second season received outrage from fans due to problems with animation and pacing, season 3 director Shinpei Nagai faced an uphill battle. The director has done his best to interact with fans via social media, but it appears that high expectations and lingering frustrations over JCStaff's handling of season two have led to a boiling point that culminated in the director leaving social media.
One-Punch Man season 3 discourse has gotten messy
When a new season is released for such a popular series as One Punch Manthere will certainly be plenty of discussion about it online. It's perfectly fair for fans to discuss their likes and dislikes about the season and share their criticisms. But there have been points where the discussion surrounding OPM Season 3 has turned heated.
Season 1 of the anime set the bar really high, and most fans will see it as the gold standard for future adaptations. The move from Madhouse to JCStaff brought not only a change in style, but also in quality. Season 2 received a lot of attention for problems with animation that Season 3 still suffers from. It's fair for fans to be upset about the inconsistent quality of the anime, but Nagai has become a lightning rod for criticism, with many disregarding the hard work he and other JCStaff staff have put into making Season 3 the best it can be.
“This is disturbing. Let's all stop arguing with each other. Let's talk about something funny instead.”
The saddest part of this whole situation is the negative toll this has taken on Nagai. The director made what appears to be a real effort early on to interact with fans and get people excited about the new season. Many fans have shown their support for him online, but it looks like a select few have ruined what should be the biggest moment of his career.
For fans keeping up with the new season, it's important to remember that there's still a long way to go. Reacting to individual episodes from week to week is part of the seasonal anime experience, but the final product isn't out yet. Things can improve, and by the end of it all, even Nagai's biggest detractors can sing a different tune.
