One Piece's new Loki Reveal creates a void that completely destroys Devil Fruit Lore

This article contains spoilers for the One Piece series.

One piece is currently in the Elbaf arc of the Final Saga, and here Oda has been paying a lot of attention to the cursed prince of Elbaf, Loki. After first being teased One Piece's The whole Cake Island arc of the story, Loki was always going to be incredibly relevant in the Elbaf arc. It goes without saying that his character so far has not disappointed.

Loki is an incredibly well-written character and at the same time incredibly powerful as well. During Elbaf's run, it can be said that Loki has established himself as one of the most important characters, and has received a lot of attention from Oda both in terms of characterization and strength. A lot of extra attention has also been paid to Loki's Devil Fruit. But in doing so, Oda has created a deep One Piece plot hole that completely destroys the Devil Fruit lore. Loki has accidentally become the first character in the One Piece world to use Devil Fruit powers despite being suppressed with the Sea Prism Stone, and that's a big problem.

Loki is one of the strongest characters in the world of One Piece, and much of that is due to his legendary Devil Fruit. As already made clear in One Piece, Loki is the user of the National Treasure of Elbaf, that is, the legendary Dragon Devil Fruit. This Devil Fruit was consumed by Loki 14 years ago to prevent Harald from consuming it and giving it to Imu. Immediately after Loki ate this Devil Fruit, he was able to transform into a giant dragon, and his overall powers grew to the point where he even managed to kill King Harald, the strongest king in Elbaf's history.

Many years later, Loki faced Shanks in battle and was defeated. After this battle, he was chained in the underworld of Elbaf next to the Adam Tree. Loki also had a Sea Prism Stone put on him, and this prevented him from using his Devil Fruit powers. As has already been made clear in the story, the Sea Prism Stone gives off the same wavelength as the sea itself, negating the Devil Fruit abilities completely.

Zoro's King of Hell makes him one of the strongest One Piece characters.

Loki himself stated that the Sea Prism Stone prevented him from using his powers. However, when Loki was partially unlocked and only had a Sea Prism Stone cuff on his ankle, he clearly grabbed Ragnir and used his lightning powers to strike down one of the giant branches of Elbaf. This ended up creating a huge empty hole in One Piece that even the author himself can't explain. It has been stated time and time again in the story that the Sea Prism Stone completely nullifies the Devil Fruit's powers, but Loki was able to use his fruit abilities to manipulate lightning even though he had a Sea Prism Stone on his ankle.

Sea Prism Stone should shut down Devil Fruit Powers

While some may argue that the Sea Prism Stone does not completely nullify Devil Fruit powers, it has been an established part of One Piece lore that even a little contact with the Sea Prism Stone is enough to completely nullify all Devil Fruits. For example, the moment Luffy touches a Sea Prism Stone cage, his Devil Fruit powers begin to run out and he feels weak.

Hell, I can't move! Get the hell out of me! — Luffy when pinned by Smoker

When Smoker put the tip of his jute on Luffy's neck, his Devil Fruit powers completely disappeared again. This continued even after the time jump, but the most damning evidence of all came in the Wano Country arc. The Weakened Sea Prism Stone was put on Luffy so he could work in the Prisoner's Mine. As confirmed by Oda at the time, even the weakened version of the Sea Prism Stone is enough to completely nullify the Devil Fruit powers of someone as strong as Luffy. In fact, this stone also prevented Luffy from using his Haki, which has nothing to do with the Devil Fruit. Again, this has become an established part of One Piece lore.

One Piece's Loki Plot Hole can't be fixed even with the volume release

One Piece Loki Plot Hole seaprism oda Volume Release

Clearly, Oda has written himself into a corner with this latest One Piece plot hole. It's something he can't even fix in a volume release. Usually, inconsistencies in character design or dialogue can be easily fixed in the volume release. But the fact is that Loki's cuffs were only recently taken by Hajrudin and the Straw Hats in the manga, and only after that was he able to fully utilize his Devil Fruit powers.

Oda can't go back in time and remove the cuffs from Loki's ankles because that would completely destroy the narrative consistency of the Elbaf arc. As such, this is an empty hole that fans will simply have to accept and move on from.

One Piece can be read on Manga Plus.
