One Piece fans know full well that Shanks is one of the most important characters Oda has created in the story. After being introduced very early on, Shanks has yet to play a major role in the plot in a direct way. One Piece chapter 1158 was largely focused on the build up to the God Valley Incidentand at the same time, Oda continued to show a lot of Shanks to the fans. It was revealed that two tests before the God Valley Incident, Garling Figarland was sent to the island with a mission. Although the island was full of riches, that was not why it became the target of the Native Hunting Games. In fact, Garling Figarland found something incredible on the island, and that's exactly what ended up convincing Imu to start the Native Hunting Games in the country.

Meanwhile, Oda revealed to fans that Garling was hooking up with a redheaded woman in God Valley during this time. 39 years ago, Shanks and Shamrock had already been born in the God Valley, and they were both together with a red-haired woman. This woman is clearly their mother, who happens to be an ordinary person. She does not appear to be Garling's wife, but still the mother of the children. As it turns out, she loves both Shanks and Shamrock quite a bit. But little did she know that they would soon be taken away from her.
38 years ago, during the God Valley Incident, Shanks and Shamrock were separatedand it is very likely that their mother died as well. Shamrock ended up with Garling Figarland, while Shanks was taken by none other than Roger Pirates. After all these years, Oda finally confirmed the story surrounding Shank's birth. This effectively means that Shanks is only half Celestial Dragon, and it explains why the Celestial Dragons loathe him.

Right now, fans know very well that Shank's secrets are still not completely clear. Fans don't know exactly what his relationship with Garling is like. It is also unclear why he went back to Marijoa, and why he eventually cut off contact with his family. Shanks and Shamrock's relationship also remains to be fully explored. Obviously, there's still a lot about Shanks that's unclear in the manga right now, and fans absolutely can't wait to see what Oda does with his character as the story moves forward.
For now, more about Shank's early life will be revealed in the chapters on the God Valley Incident and those after it.
