This article contains spoilers for manganese one piece
It has become something of a regular trope in the Shonen series that it will always be the wise old man who also happens to be extremely strong, despite his age. At A bit Although it is only a single older power plant, the series is actually full of strong pirates and marine soldiers who, even though they are on the older side, can still deal with an incredible amount of damage thanks to their devil fruit ability, their physical strength and their mastery over their Haki.
The author of A bitEiichiro Oda, has actually commented on why he wanted to make the old timber seen in the story so extremely powerful, and to be honest it was definitely a good decision on his part to make this happen, given how loved many of these individuals have become. Anyone who has wondered why there are so many powerful characters in A bit Which never seems to slow down with age has finally has his answer, as ODA has opened up about what specifically pressed him to write these characters in this special way.
Some of One Piece's strongest characters are older

Some of the strongest characters approaching retirement
It would be easy to assume that a character that has lived life on a pirate for more than a few decades would start to slow down when they reach retirement age. But even though there are some characters that can enjoy calling it, living a quiet life after their great adventure, most of them will simply become even stronger the older they get, and there are a variety of examples of this is the case.
For example, Big Mom and Kaido, who were once loyal members of Rocks Crew, would eventually become Emperor of the Sea after forming their own pirate crews after stones were taken down into God Valley. Kaido in particular would be so absurd strong that Luffy would be forced to channel the underlying power of the sun god Nika to even land a scratch on him, even though the protagonist was many years younger than his powerful enemy. That being said, however, it is not only the pirates that have become stronger with age, as this also applies to many marine soldiers who will gladly fight for their cause, no matter how old they are.
“I survived again … Old Whitebeard did it right” – Kaido
SenGoku is a great example of a navy that, despite being much older than the average soldier, was still more than happy to wipe out massive swarms of pirates with his Zoan Devil Fruit during the MarineFord War. Akainu and Kizaru are two other remarkable figures that could eliminate countless number of offenders during the chaotic conflict, although they are no longer as youthful as they once were. It is obvious that ODA has no problems making his older characters just like, if not stronger than the young people, and he has finally revealed why this is the case.
Oda wanted to show how cool older is really
The author did not want them to fade to ambiguity
According to the author, there are a number of older people in real life who he considers to be “cool”, but admits that many of them are no longer strong considering how long they have been and kicks. As a result, he wanted to respect the older generation by making his older characters as powerful as possible, and when he looks at how much carnage characters like Garp and Kaido can add, it is fair to say that older fans would be extremely proud of what ODA has managed to achieve with its depiction of these characters.
ODA's comments are actually very meaningful when he looks at how much he has been affected by real individuals, by which many would now be in their older years. For example, it is well known that many A bit Characters are based on actors and celebrities who were prominent several decades ago when ODA was still a future artist. For example, Admiral Kizaru was strongly based on the famous Japanese actor Kunie Tanaka, who was extremely popular in the 1980s and 90s, and who unfortunately died just a few years ago. Yusaku Matsuda, who was considered to be one of Japan's most influential actors about the same time, was also used as a reference when ODA created the cool and calculated Aokiji, with their patterns were more or less identical.
It is quite obvious that Oda wanted to show how incredibly inspiring these figures were to him when he was a young man to a whole new audience of readers, who may not even have heard of these individuals before because he was so young. But even though it is definitely exciting to learn why Oda has made his older characters as formidable as fighting, it asks the question of who is considered the strongest of them all.
Which older character is the strongest?
Marines, pirates, the world government, every fraction has its army of old warriors
-
Garp is an absolute power plant, although he is far past his premiere
-
Kaido was considered unbeatable for much of his life
-
The five elders have demonic forces that make them a significant threat
The world of A bit Is full of strong characters, but ironically, some of the most powerful tend to be the oldest, with the greatest example that this is Monkey D Garp. Although Oda has been careful not to show too much of Garp in action, from the glimpses that have seen so far, it is clear that even in his older years Garp has not slowed down a bit, to the point where many consider that he is not only the strongest navy, but the potentially even the strongest character in the entire series.
“Their unstoppable evil rampage, who trampled on everyone in its wake, was finally suffocated by Marine Vice Admiral Garp” – Sengooku
His biggest power exhibition came when he decided to save Koby from Pirate Island. With a single Galaxy Impact Punch, Garp was able to send shock waves throughout the island and beat someone back nearby without even touching them. As someone who is partly credited to defeat stones and his entire crew, ODA has made it clear that Garp was a real monster in his premiere, but even today Marine has proven that he is still more than happy to take down someone who dares to stand in the way of him and his mission.
Kaido is also considered an extremely strong old -fashioned who knocked out pirates to the left, right and mid -before Luffy eventually defeated him after activating Gear 5. In recent times, the five elders have also shown their own strength on Egghead Island, with their demonic similar transformations to acquire Havoc over the island without a Care in the World for any. Garp, Kaido and the elders are definitely among the strongest elderly A bit characters, but IMU also deserves a mention, although their forces are still largely shrouded in mystery.
