ODA admits that Luffy's crew would originally become villains

This article contains spoilers up to the water 7 bow of a piece

It's hard to find many A bit Fans who don't love Straw Hat Pirates. This lovely party of characters has all accompanied Luffy on their journey to become the king of the pirates for hundreds of chapters and sections, but because of how much different they are in their personalities and fighting styles, it means that each fan will have their own personal favorite. While the straw hats can fall out with each other so often, none of them have ever abandoned the crew to eventually become villains, but it seems to be much more antagonistic if Eiichiro Oda went through their original plan.

Given how great and ambitious A bit Is like a story, that means that ODA would have had a lot of planning to do before he officially started drawing, and when it comes to the straw hats specifically, he has revealed a rather revealing information about how they were originally intended to be completely different than fans know them today. Although it is good that the extremely talented author decided to make them much more friendly and heroic when the time passed, these comments make it easy to wonder how the straw hats would have been if they were really evil, especially considering that this was almost the case.

The straw hats would originally be villains

They would have joined Luffy after being defeated

  • Similar to classic JRPGs

  • ODA decided that the idea would not have been so realistic

  • Most of the straw hats ended up being much more pleasant

Already in 2018, Eiichiro Oda was interviewed as part of a Japanese media channel to speak a bit about the popularity of A bit And where it was led in the future. While this interview is full of exciting questions and answers, one that is particularly revealing when the interviewer asks Oda why the story had moved at such a rapid pace, especially after the time.

While Oda admits that it is mainly because the characters he created now have his own will that he has difficulty controlling sometimes, he pauses for a moment before he went more into depth about how he thought the straw hats would come over before the story began. According to Oda, he wanted Luffy's future crews to be villains who would only join the adventure after being defeated and seen the errors in their roads. In fact, he even resembled this idea with a video game where it has become a very common trope, especially in JRPG.

“Originally, I thought about doing the crew mate process like the video games where the villains join your party when you defeat them.” – Eiichiro Oda

He continues to admit that this just would not have been so realistic, given that most people probably would not feel inclined to become a servant for the person who just destroyed their livelihood and reputation, which is honestly very meaningful. While some of the straw hats may have acted a little hostile to Luffy when they first met him, they all quickly warmed up to their captain after spending a few hours riding with him along the sea, but with that said, there are some members that ODA still made an attempt to present as villains when they first appeared in the story.

Robin and Franky were less antagonists at first

It seems that ODA did not throw out his original idea completely

Although it is clear that ODA eventually decided to take a different attitude when it came to how Luffy would gather his crew, he did not scratch the idea that the straw hats were completely villains. Robin and Frany are specifically two members who actually started as minor antagonists in their respective stories. For Robin, she was originally an accomplice to the luminous tyrant called crocodile. Then Robin cared very little about going on some great adventures, considering that she had become a cold -hearted and cruel individual because of all the suffering she experienced with the destruction of her home island, ohara.

When it comes to Franky, Cyborg was simply obsessed with looking good in front of his family, so much so that he would end up causing many problems for the straw hats, especially wealthy, because they navigated through water 7. It is not until the end of the story that Frany decides on Buddy with the straw hats and to go with them as a college, even if it was far from it.

While these two may not have been large villains, they still made no secret that they were directly against Luffy and his crew for some reason, at least to begin with. That being said, Luffy is a captain who is simply impossible to hate, which is just a reason for how he has managed to collect a crew of so many powerful individuals without having to bribe them with money or tax.

Luffy's tricks to pick up new crews

There are many reasons why he is so gifted to call people to their side

  • Luffy has an infectious optimism that inspires others

  • His power makes him the captain that others can trust

  • Being a member of the D -clan fascinates some of the straw hats

The most obvious reason why Luffy has the ability to convince people to join his crew is simply his endless optimism. Most in A bit Tends to look at the world in a pessimistic light, considering that it is not so nice in a place to live when the world government and Marines constantly carry out its own selfish deeds. Luffy, however, has this childish enthusiasm that convinces others to look at things with a more positive way of thinking and convince them to persecute their dreams, no matter how difficult it may seem at first.

“Without you I won't … I can't be the Pirate King” – Luffy to Sanji

Another important reason why Luffy has been able to order such an authority is because of how powerful he is as a fighting. Luffy does not care about being honest or proper in a struggle, he simply uses his rubber body to throw out gigantic punches and kicks to overwhelm everyone who treats others unfairly. When it comes to characters like Nami and Robin, Luffy was able to use their power to free them from their prisoners, giving them the opportunity to live a free life along the open seas.

There is also a fairly more special reason why some straw hats expressed an interest in Luffy, and that is because he is a member of the D clan. Oda has been very secretive about what the first one really means, but it has become clear that it is something that scares the world government to their core. The whole reason Robin decided to save Luffy from Sand Whirlpool in Alabasta was because he was a member of the D clan, but it also became a topic for fascination for Jinbei, who joined the straw hats a little later in the story. Of course, there are a number of reasons why Luffy is seen as a worthy captain, and it is allowed to become one of the most powerful pirates in the world that the world government is completely petrified.
