Important takeaways

  • No Man's Sky now has a “Highly Positive” rating on Steam, showcasing its remarkable comeback from a disappointing launch.

  • Recent feedback, player engagement and new updates like Expeditions highlight the game's ongoing success and growth.

No Man's Sky has received an overall rating of “Very Positive” on Steam, effectively leaving behind the game's disappointing launch in 2016. The good news for No Man's Sky studio Hello Games comes after years of improving the game via post-launch updates.

When No Man's Sky first revealed in 2013, it quickly won the hearts of gamers with its procedurally generated open world and became one of the most anticipated indie titles. But when the space exploration game finally launched three years later, it received disappointing reviews and lost most of its initially huge player base in a short period of time. Then came one of the most remarkable comebacks in video game history, with Hello Games winning back the favor of gamers by gradually improving No Man's Sky with many stains and content reductions over the years. Most recently, the action-adventure title unlocked another indicator of its late but resounding success.

No Man's Sky continues to receive positive reviews and promising engagements

In recent years, No Man's Sky have not only received positive feedback but also experienced growth in engagement time and time again. While these latest bumps in player count haven't been anywhere near the 212K peak concurrent players achieved at launch, they've shown that Hello Games has been able to roll out engaging content regularly since its release. Its most recent peak came on July 22, with 54,951 players simultaneously playing the game, days after the Worlds Part 1 update was dropped. The studio's commitment to listening to its community even made it among the nominees in the Best Community Support category at The Game Awards 2024.

Recently, No Man's Sky players gained access to new expeditions, bringing new challenges and rewards to the spaceship game. The current set of expeditions will last until the end of the Aquarius expedition on February 5, 2025. In addition to these updates, Hello Games's Do not light a fire is also in the works, which will be another massive open world game.
