This article was updated by Andrea Trama on March 9, 2026, with information from the new Super Mario Galaxy Movie trailer. It was first published on March 6.
Today's Nintendo Direct has officially revealed the new trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, including action scenes involving Bowser Jr. and the announcement of who voices Yoshi. The actor chosen for the role is Donald Glover, which shocked the online Mario community, although fans are praising him for handling the role. Honey Queen is also confirmed to be in the film, voiced by Issa Rae, and so is Wart, voiced by Luis Guzman.
The original story follows:
A new one Nintendo Direct has been officially announced for March 9, though it comes with a big catch: it will be exclusively focused on The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Still, Nintendo's track record indicates that one of the company's public exhibitions could also happen in the near future.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie premiered in April 2023 to historic success, becoming the fourth highest-grossing animated film of all time. Nintendo formally confirmed that a sequel was in the works in March 2024. The project was presented as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie the following year, and even received a dedicated Nintendo Direct in November 2025.
The Super Mario Galaxy movie gets its third Nintendo Direct in four months

Since early 2026, Nintendo has held a Partner Showcase Direct and an Indie World broadcast, as well as one focusing on Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. That's in addition to the regular Pokémon giveaways on February 27 and the soon-to-be two Directs focused on The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Meanwhile, almost nothing is known about Nintendo's own first-party game schedule for the coming months. The last public Nintendo Direct was held in September 2025, and made announcements centered on over half a dozen games, including Pokemon Pokopiawhich was just released worldwide on March 5th. With Pokemon Pokopia officially out, Nintendo only has one remaining first-party game with a confirmed release date—Tomodachi Life: Living the Dreamscheduled to launch on April 16.
Given these circumstances, there is a likely chance that the next Nintendo Direct will happen in the near future. September has historically been the most reliable window for a generally usable Nintendo Direct. Outside of this anchor spot, the company has often used February and June for its larger showcases, while March and April have been comparatively rare and usually linked to disruptions to its regular schedule. However, with Nintendo's currently confirmed release roadmap ending on April 16, the company may have reason to provide an earlier update rather than waiting until June 2026 to outline its next slate of titles.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book
Looking at the current list of announced Switch 2 titles, several projects seem likely to be included in the next Nintendo Direct, whenever that happens. Chief among them is Nintendo's puzzle platformer Yoshi and the Mysterious Bookwhich was revealed in September 2025 with a spring 2026 release window. The game follows Yoshi as he explores a magical encyclopedia, befriending its many creatures and using their abilities to solve puzzles and navigate a series of challenges.
Three additional Switch 2 titles are also targeted for a 2026 launch: Rhythm Heaven Groove, Splatoon Raidersand Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave. Since neither has yet been assigned a firm release date, each stands as a reasonable candidate for the next general Nintendo Direct. When it comes to The Super Mario Galaxy Moviethe film is scheduled to hit screens on April 1, 2026. Chris Pratt (Mario), Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), Charlie Day (Luigi), Jack Black (Bowser) and Keegan-Michael Key (Toad) all reprise their roles from The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
