New Sonic Frontiers version has been leaked online

A definitive edition of Sonic Frontiers appears to have leaked online ahead of an official announcement from Sega. Originally released in 2022, Sonic Frontiers is the latest major 3D game starring Sonic the Hedgehog. As a change for the series, Sonic Frontiers introduced the open zone concept, giving players large open spaces to explore as they progress through more traditional Sonic levels. Sega refined the open-zone concept with Shadow generations in 2024, and the company has suggested that future games will continue to expand on the idea.

Located on the Starfall Islands, Sonic Frontiers introduced new characters to the series on top of the new Open Zone mechanic. Sonic's adventures lead him to interact with Starfall Island's Koco residents, and he also comes into conflict with Sage, Ivo Robotnik's android daughter. Since the game's release, Sage has become a major Sonic the Hedgehog character, returned in the 2025s Sonic Racing: CrossWorldsand even appearing in IDW's Sonic series. The character has yet to appear in Paramount's live-action Sonic universe, but it seems like it's only a matter of time, given the positive reception the character has received over the past few years.

The definitive edition of Sonic Frontiers

A definitive edition of Sonic Frontiers has seemingly been leaked by Korea's Game Rating and Administration Committee. Scoreboard leaks occur quite frequently in the video game industry and are often some of the most reliable sources of early information. Unfortunately, the leak doesn't offer any additional information, so there's no telling what else Sega plans to add to the original game. Sonic Frontiers received significant free post-launch DLC, including the ability to play as Tails, Knuckles, and Amy. Presumably, all of that content will be included in the definitive release, but it's possible that there could be some new additions. There are many ways Sega can build on the game's foundations, such as adding new areas to explore and new challenges to take on. It would give current fans a good excuse to return to the game.

Sonic Frontiers is the best selling 3D Sonic game ever, with more than 4.5 million copies sold since launch. The Sonic the game managed to far surpass titles like Sonic Forcesand a definitive edition could help Sega further inflate those sales numbers. The Game Review and Administration Committee leak does not mention any platforms for Sonic Frontiers definitive edition, but there is a system that seems to be a very safe card. Sonic Frontiers had a lot of room for improvement on the original Switch, and it's possible that Sega is planning a definitive release on the Nintendo Switch 2 to improve frame rates, graphics, and load times. If that turns out to be the case, it would be nice if Sega offered some sort of upgrade path for existing owners of the Switch 1 version. However, it is worth noting that the publisher avoided doing so with Sonic x Shadow Generations last year.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the original Sonic the Hedgehog the game, which was released on the Sega Genesis back in 1991. So far, Sega has revealed a slick new logo for the anniversary, but the company hasn't said much about its plans to celebrate the occasion. A definitive edition of Sonic Frontiers would be a good start though. There have been rumors about it Sonic Frontiers 2 could be released in November 2026, and if so, it would make sense to give newcomers another chance to see what the first game has to offer. For now, Sonic fans will just have to wait patiently to see if this leak ends up being confirmed.
