Stardew Valley may have ushered in a new era of cozy farm sims, but Crop looks like it might start the anti-cozy farming movement. It's been more than 10 years since ConceredApe's indie classic first hit the scene, and it's still going strong, with multiple free updates and a vibrant modding scene keeping the game as popular as ever. Many games have tried to emulate Stardew Valley in the years since, and now a newcomer could give the formula a unique twist.
While the 1999s Harvest Moon 64 laid the foundation for the cozy whirlwind, Stardew Valley has become the definitive modern example of the genre. It's the standard by which all farming sims are measured today and arguably the starting point for the tidal wave of cozy games that have flooded the market in recent years. Stardew Valley has inspired tons of great games with varying degrees of similarity to the title, and so it was only a matter of time before developers tried to turn the genre on its head.

Crop looks like a Lovecraftian Stardew Valley
On April 8, 2026, Carbonara Games unveiled its first ever game, a creepy farming simulation called Crop. The Stardew Valley The inspiration is immediately apparent, with the player character taking over a farm in an unfamiliar town and tasked with cleaning up the property, tending crops and learning more about the townspeople and the surrounding area. Unlike Stardewhowever, it shares elements of the Lovecraftian horror genre that inspired it Blood borne and that Amnesia series, among others. There is an unsettling fog over many of the scenes and a growing uneasiness as the player character sees flashes of grotesque images, signs of the occult and even a body in the ground.
As Stardew Valley, Crop also comes from a small team. However, according to the title's Steam page, Carbonara Games consists of only three developers Crop also has the support of 11 Bit Studios as a publisher. 11 pieces The Alters was one of the best indie games of 2025, and the company has published some hidden gems like Death Howl and Moonlighterthus Crop might be one to watch. Publisher's pedigree aside, the game's unique mix of cosmic horror and cozy farmhouse sounds like it could make for quite the experience for Stardew fans looking for something a little darker.
According to CropOn the Steam site, players will dig, plant, irrigate and harvest as they revive a ruined farm and try to learn more about the mysterious village they've found themselves in and must now feed. As players progress, they will uncover secrets about the city and how they got there, and it all sounds very ominous, far from the comfort and friendliness of Stardew Valley. The mix of genres reminds how Dredge combined creepy and cozy in a Lovecraftian fishing sim, and if it's anything like that title, Carbonara Games might have something special on their hands.
